ear infection - would I know?

I am paranoid that LO is going to have an ear infection and I am not going to know it.   For those that have had ear infections, would I know?  Would all sleeping be bad, not just night sleeping?

He will periodically pull on his ear, but I also heard that is a sign of teething.

He doesn't have a fever.

He seems to be in good spirits.

But can't seem to get comfortable at night.

Debating if I should just take him in to see the Pedi for piece of mind.

H has had two, and didn't have a lot of traditional symptoms - except for refusing to nurse the first time, and having bad sleep/eye goop the second time. If you feel like something's not right, do you have a nurse line you can call? Has he had a head cold recently?

ETA: both times I went with my gut and took him in, and I'm glad I did.

  • He just got over a head cold.  Other than sleeping crappy, I have noticed anything really off, maybe I will just go in for piece of mind.
  • That's a tough one because yes, teething can cause them to pull at their ears AND be up more at night. O has had two ear infections. The first time she was 9 months and she was acting really sleepy during the day, but then up crying several times at night. She also had a high fever. I knew something was up mainly because of the fever.

The 2nd time was just recently and I was paranoid about it because she had a bad cold for two weeks that turned into bronchitis. Any time they have so much fluid drainage for so long, I'd be concerned about it resulting in an ear infection. I noticed a lower fever (like right at 101) on Wednesday night, but then her fever was gone in the morning and it didn't return until Thursday evening (still low). With it being a weekend coming up and her being sick already, I went with my gut and took her in. She didn't have a fever at the doctor, but she did have an ear infection that was in the early stages.

Is he showing any other signs of teething? Like chewing on everything or extra fussy at other times than during sleep time?

Like @gargita said- just go with your gut. You're usually right. Hope he feels better!

  • Thanks.  I have decided to take him in.   He is chewing on things and I do think he is getting teeth.  However,  I think he has been fussier than usual (still not a ton, he is a really happy baby). Plus if I think about it, yesterday he seems to not have much of an appetite. I don't know, better safe than sorry.
  • Em had an ear infection at 9 months and she wouldn't eat anything and just wanted to sleep all the time.

  • We have had 4 :(

    Refusing to nurse

    Poor appetite for solids

Does not want to be layed down- it hurts more

    Fever

General fussiness and periods of inconsolable crying

  • Thanks all. I took him in . . . he was fine.  Oh well. . . I guess that is what insurance is for.

Worth the co-pay for the peace of mind :)

  • Definitely worth the peace of my like AmberEA said!

I just thought I would add DD has had four ear infections and had almost no symptoms (some fussiness, waking up occasionally at night). Like Gargita said, I just went with my gut and took her in.

    Glad everything was Ok! :)
