Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How do I make my 9 mon old sleep at night?

She was such a good sleeper when she was born, but she's becoming worse and worse. I've tired putting her I her crib, in the swing and with me and she still doesn't sleep thru the night. She can easily wake up 8 times and just cries. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Re: How do I make my 9 mon old sleep at night?

  • There are no easy answers to sleep issues. I don't know the background...you say she's becoming worse. So was she really good until now, or has this been progressing for months? What time does she go to bed? How does she eat? How does she nap?

For us, routine is the key. Also, low lights, soothing music, very warm bottle, and warm lotion - very non-stimulating, relaxing stuff at least an hour before bed. Also, a very wise mommy recommended that I start James to bed just a half hour earlier, and what a difference!!! Moving bed time to 7:00 kept him from getting over tired.

There are periods of time for us that no matter what we do, he sleeps like shit. Often it's related to developing a new motor skill or during periods of lots of brain development, and he's too "wired" and busy to sleep.

IMO, 8 times awake through the night is a bit excessive at 9 months, so you might want to make sure with the ped that she doesn't have any health issues keeping her from sleeping, and if not, you might want to consider some gentle sleep training if you are so inclined.

  • She takes two 2 hr naps a day. Goes to sleep same time as we do, usually 10-11. If she goes to sleep any sooner, she wakes up after about 2 hrs thinking it was a nap. I will try some of the suggestions above. Thank you ladies!

when i first started putting my LO to bed at 7pm he would wake up 2 hours later but i just kept the lights low and rocked him for a bit and then 10 minutes later he was back asleep.   i would try the earlier bedtime and eventually see if she will catch on.  bedtime routine helps too.  we start it at 5:45pm everyday with bath, then dim lighting in his room, pajamas, then book, then feed, then down between 6:45-7pm every night.

She needs an earlier bedtime. Most babies wake up after sleeping for a bit, you just need to get them back to sleep. The recommended bedtimes are 6:30-8

  • As the others said, a way earlier bedtime will make baby sleep better through the night.  Seems backwards, but it is very much proven.  The changes won't happen overnight.  Baby will wake, most all do...just help them back to sleep.  In time she will sleep longer and better.  When she wakes after 2hrs keep the room dark, sooth her, keep it consistent. Use white noise, sing a song, or rock her briefly, or just rub her back.

  • Two things.  I agree solely with the routine.  We have a bottle at 7, then a bath, then put jammies on, read books, then go into her room and rock for about 5 minutes with the lights off.  She puts her head down on my shoulder as we walk into the room as soon as the lights go off, then I put her in her crib.  The second thing, I put her to sleep on her tummy.  I know it's a no-no, but DD would not sleep on her back.  Once your baby can lift her head up and get up on her arms she is safe, but use your judgment for what is right for your baby.  A 9 month old, is mobile enough to turn herself on to her tummy, so she should be fine.  I started tummy sleep at nap time only to get us both used to the idea and then made the switch to bed time.  She sleeps 12 straight hours every night.
