How do you handle it???
We tried sleep training, but DD has been reverse cycling and doesn't take solids, so she's up usually 2-3 times a night to eat. She goes down great for bed, then we put her back in bed awake after she eats, and she's usually fast asleep within a couple minutes. This is completely tolerable for me.
Last night, she was up every 2 hours. And then every 30-45 minutes, starting at about 1 am. (Obviously not hunger).. But my question is.. How do you get through the day after nights like that? I'm completely useless. I've only been here about 30 minutes, and I've spent most of that time spacing out. I don't do caffeine (Can't stand coffee or tea), but I've got to do something.
Re: Sleepless nights
When I had days like this, because of nights like you are describing I would do the following.
1) Eat well. Good food fuels you. And stay hydrated lots of water.
2) Relax and rest and close my eyes while I pumped in the morning. Don't try and work during that 15-20min.
3) Take my full 1hr lunch break (early if at all possible 10:30-11:00) and take a nap in my car for 20-40minutes of that hour.
4) If possible leave early for the day. I learned if DD had a good night and I slept well to take advantage of that at work and work a little longer/get a little more done to make up for the days I was just not going to make it due to sleep deprivation.
ETA: sleep training never worked for us. We just had to ride things out and around 13-14months her sleep got so much better. Also, totally agree with pp on Advil for the teething. I think we dosed DD every night for 2 months straight, but it was the only thing that kept her asleep through the night.
My son went through weeks of being up several times a night (lots of teeth and growing all happened at once).
One thing that helped is my husband and I took turns alternating nights: I'd let him sleep one night and then it would be my turn the next. It was still really hard to be productive after my turn, but I knew I could count on having sleep that night.
Then I could just focus on using my energy as productively as possible: I'd try to work for 60 minute intervals and then walk for a min to wake myself up again.
