~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog.

1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

2. Let's start a holiday recipe series! I'm thinking we can share one type of dish each week - this week, how about an MSPI-friendly appetizer?

3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Good and good! We got some results of the allergy tests we were able to do last week (we should finish up this week) and all were negative. His skin was clear all last week until yesterday. The suspected offenders are either the goat milk or fresh ginger I used in the muffins I made. He also seems to get a little constipated from the goat milk, so I'm not sure it will be as much of a staple in his diet as I thought it might (I really want to stop pumping at work!!).

    2. Let's start a holiday recipe series! I'm thinking we can share one type of dish each week - this week, how about an MSPI-friendly appetizer? I've never been great with appetizers but last year for Thanksgiving I got some Applegate Farms lunch meat and crackers (don't remember which brand), and hummus and veggies. Gaucamole and chips would work too!

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?Halloween was harder on me than I expected. Our office potluck was off the charts with delicious looking sweet and savory treats, and I was starving but could hardly eat any of it. I was SO tempted to cheat and have a cupcake, but I walked away and was so proud of myself... until DH brought a dessert plate home!! (We work at the same place.) I was grumpy at him the rest of the weekend. :(

  • @Earlybird725 You can drizzle olive oil over veggies to add some fat. Sounds like you're eating goat cheese - could you give that to your DD, or goat milk? If she's eating nuts those are good too, maybe nut butters on toast at this age. I hope the allergist appt goes well!
  • 1.How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We are doing well... Week 8 of our diet. My LO is starting to sleep a little better but her diapers are not getting any better :(

I agree with PP Halloween was harder than I thought it would be. I kept wanting just one. But I didn't do it!

2.Let's start a holiday recipe series!I'm thinking we can share one type of dish each week - this week, how about an MSPI-friendly appetizer? This is my first holiday so I have never had to prepare before.... I did just discover that Bush's beans don't have soy so I will be eating lots of those lol

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? @rocknrollfriend what type of allergy tests & how old is your LO?
A friend of mine had a scratch allergy test done on her 8 mo but my dr says no allergy test can be completed until 2 yo

  • @ToAoShesha We just had it done at 19 mo, blood tests. I have heard other mom's say their dr said the results are unreliable for younger babies but our allergist didn't have any concerns like that. I still haven't talked to her in depth about the results, though.
  • 1. I have sinusitis. DS is really struggling with the time change. Besides that we are ok on dealing with food allergies front. I'm thinking of trying soy protein again with him soon.

    2. I'm not much of a cook, but I got some great MPI appetizers from Whole Foods - vegan spring rolls and some kind of Indian type dumpling with potato and peas I forget the name of it. However be careful bc then I went to another Whole Foods and their fresh prepared spring rolls were vegetarian but not vegan (DS is allergic to egg). Ingredients seem to change depending on location.

    3. Since people are talking about allergists, i'll just add that DS's allergist says the field of allergy constantly changing. Maybe that is why I hear such different advice that people get from their child's allergist. I hear very contradictory things from friends and family who take their children to different allergists.

Hi all! I'm new to this checkin, my LO was just diagnosed with silent reflux so we're just finishing week 1 of dairy free and Zantac!

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Me: still mentally and emotionally exhausted, as she's not showing a ton of progress yet and still cries in pain at times and hates being put down! :-< hoping it starts improving more!

Thankfully her eczema cleared from her face! She still has the painful cries and I can hear her reflux in her sleep since she lays on my chest!

I previously followed a paleo diet which I may end up getting back to thanks to LO. Here's a pineapple chicken skewer app recipe from one of my favorite paleo sites who are friends! https://www.primalpalate.com/recipe/pineapple-chicken-skewers/

Please tell me this doesn't last forever? I had dairy last Wednesday before she was diagnosed and cut it since. Were doing Zantac twice a day and it's helped a little but not a lot. I love her dearly but holding her 22 hours a day is getting the better of me (she won't sleep unless she's laying on my chest) :((
    Eta: forgot info!

  • @jpryber0528 I don't have experience with reflux but I'm pretty sure it doesn't last forever. :) Do you have her in a sling or other carrier? How old is she? I hope she starts feeling better soon and gives you a break. Can you have someone else watch her for a few hours so you can take a break now?

She is making small, itty bitty progress! She slept in her swing for one hour today! Woohoo! She's 6 weeks and 2 days. We have the Moby and the baby Bjorn. Sometimes she'll tolerate the Moby but usually not. I'm going to look into a different carrier next week!

  • @jpryber0528 my nephew and niece had reflux. The good news is it didn't last forever for them, the bad news is it wasn't until 8 or 9 months. Their GI Dr said that is the magical time when the gut matures. I hope it goes away sooner than that for your LO!

THe Attachment Parenting board always has good advice about carriers, if you haven't been over there already you might give them a try. GL!
