Cracked Tooth

So, this weekend I noticed that I have a crack going down the middle of my front tooth. Awesome, right? You can't feel it and I can only see it when I shine a light directly on it.

WHAT THE HELL! I am terrified. What are they going to do? The dentist can't get me in for another week. I am so scared.

Re: Cracked Tooth

  • Yikes!  I'm certainly not a dentist, but I would guess a root canal and a cap to prevent further breakage.  That's what they do with a cavity that they can't fill.  Maybe this is similar??

  • Scary for sure!  It doesn't hurt?
I have no clue what they do, but if it makes you feel better I have half a fake tooth in the front.  You would never be able to tell by looking at it.  Even if I point it out.

No, it doesn't hurt. I just happened to look in the mirror in the car with the sun shining directly on my face. I seriously about shit my pants. That does make me feel better though, I have no clue what to expect.

  • I had a cracked tooth a while ago and the dentist did bonding to fix it. It was a hairline crack that I couldn't feel. He noticed it during a check up.

  • It may be fine, I had a boating accident when I was 16 that resulted in me chipping and cracking a front tooth. The dentist did X-rays and a test with electrical stimulation, then he just repaired the chip and sent me on my way. It's been almost 10 years and I have yet to have an issue.

  • Bonding :)

And that made my mouth hurt just reading it!

  • Dental Professional here :) relax, lots of teeth have cracks. Picture a glass beer mug, sometimes they can have hairline cracks inside the glass, the mug still works, right? It's probably no big deal and your dentist will just observe it. The fact that your not in pain is a good sign, and at the most you will just need a small filling.

Ahhh! Thank you. FX that it's an easy fix.

Add me to the fake front teeth group. They'll most likely cap it if the root's good.

  • my front tooth is fake too. He will most likely bond it. The fact that he didn't rush to get you in also shows no need to freak out too bad :)

  • If it makes you feel any better, within the next month I will have a full set of top veneers, thanks to a baby who likes to throw his head backwards when angry, weakened enamel from the MS during pregnancy, and fluoride damage from when I was a kid.  DS chipped two, cracked one, and managed to damage one enough that the root was affected and I needed a root canal.  But hey, at least he has a solid skull?

So technically half of my mouth will be "fake" by then - I spent too much time freaking out over who would judge me for it, but honestly with dental technology today cracks like that are probably NBD.

  • I have a crack in my front tooth that I've had for ever. I smacked my mouth on the monkey bars during recess. I've never had a problem with it and my dentist has never mentioned fixing it. It's not super noticable. You'll be ok! FX it's a simple fix!
