Dinner or Supper

Which do you say? Is there a difference between them or are they the same meal?

I say dinner. But my grandparents always called lunch dinner and dinner supper.

BUT, I still say supper in the evening, even though that's usually our biggest meal. I mostly do it to bug MH because he calls it dinner. :P

We say dinner. Most people where I live say dinner. I agree with you, the word supper sounds weird to me.

I say dinner. But holiday dinners are genearlly earlier in the day.

Growing up we said supper. But I guess that didn't stick because I say dinner now.

I say dinner but grew up hearing it as "supper" (both of my parent's families are from GA so maybe its southern?)

Definitely not a Southern thing. I've lived in Atlanta most of my life and I have heard no one IRL use the term "supper"

Yup. I was going to say the same thing.

I have always said supper and now, use both interchangeably. After reading this, both words sound ridiculous.

I call the evening meal "dinner" but growing up I always called it supper. I grew up on a farm and it seems like more people that I knew growing up called it supper....maybe a more rural thing. Now, I like in a medium size community and everyone calls it dinner.

I do think there's a regional component. I'm very familiar with "supper" and wouldn't think it strange if someone used that term. It's just not what usually comes out of my mouth. And churches hold pancake suppers. Not pancake dinners.

In my part of Scotland your lunchtime meal is either dinner or lunch, evening meal is dinner or tea, and supper is only every the little snack before you go to bed (which is not something every family would do).
