AW: I got a new job finally!

I didn't even tell you guys I was interviewing because I didn't want to jinx it and I am sure you were getting sick of my complaining about the roller coaster.

I interviewed Friday and got the offer Monday. I'll be a Director of Digital Marketing Products at one of the big 3 credit bureaus. I start 12/2!!! Raise and bigger bonus!

I am quitting today at my current job. Not giving notice, quitting and walking out and enjoying the next month off. My boss is out so I dont know who I'm quitting to today but I hate him and never want to see him again. I'll likely quit to his boss or our HR rep simply saying "I'm moving on to a new opportunity and it doesn't afford me to give 2 weeks so today will be my last day".

When I get in, I am going to print out some important info like HR Contacts, unused PTO I have, clear everything off my computer and turn on an out of office reply. Any other key things I should do before walking out to protect myself?

Re: AW: I got a new job finally!

  • Congrats on the new job!!

Nothing to add before you walk out, other than I'm jealous you have a month off.  I've never had the opportunity to take more than a day or two inbetween jobs, and I always wish I had.

Maybe you should leave your contact info with someone you trust in case they have questions on things you were working on?

    Woohoo! Congrats!!

My first thought was that you should definitely leave them an upper decker :-D If you don't know what that is, just ignore me hahaha.

I don't know, clear internet history, personal emails, private items from desk, etc? Let me think about that one!

The only thing that makes me nervous is the leaving without notice. I've always given notice, even to the worst of jobs. Principle I suppose, but who's kidding who: I'd be worried about burning bridges (not just your boss, it's anyone who notices, like colleagues). But if you see that as a non-issue, then don't sweat it. It sounds like it has been a negative work environment for a long time, and I think in that case you can leave without notice with a clear conscience!

I am so glad that you are moving on from such a negative force in your life!! :)

  • @tinyhumantoe I never thought I would do anything like this and am scared shitless but I am tired of having panic attacks Sunday nights and have never worked with such horrible people in my life. This board kept me sane all day. I'm scared to not have insurance for a month also but I just can go in that place another day and see that scumbag. Most of them are lifers who will die there and I am linked in to anyone worth knowing from there. Hope it ends up not biting me.

  • I'm glad you have a new job! That is so exciting.

I'm with THT here. Quitting without giving notice makes me a little :-SS ,perhaps because I work in HR. I know we often ask people why they didn't give notice in a previous position. We also like to have time to set up exit interviews to speak with people about why they are leaving etc.

I know you hate this job so I definitely understand wanting to give everyone the finger and walk out laughing but it makes me nervous to read this.
  • Congratulations!
  • Congratulations on the new job :) I'm glad you can finally get away from your boss!

And I am with THT and Banich, I always give two weeks notice because if a future employer ever contacts a past employer I think leaving without notice makes you look bad but that's just me and you know your situation better than we do so enjoy your month off!

  • First, congrats on the new job! That's awesome!

Quitting without notice also makes me a little nervous for your professional reputation. It sounds like an awful place, but you could stick it out for another week or two, I'm sure! (And I mean that in a "go you!" Not snarky way). Just my thoughts. But obviously you know your situation better than us! :)

I'm thinking the same thing. It makes me nervous to burn a bridge even if they're complete and utter a-holes. But CONGRATS on the new job! I hope it's fabulous.

  • So happy for you! We all know you've been looking for this opportunity! One day closes and another opens! It's amazing how it all works out.

I can't give advice on leaving without notice but if you feel comfortable with it then by all means. I don't "know" your situation! Enjoy the next month off!!! I'm jealous!

  • Congratulations!  I know you've been wanting out of that job for a long time, so I'm happy that you're able to make it happen!

I will say that even more than burning bridges being without insurance for a month would worry me. Are your kids insured under you?

Although.........guess what? You can just stick to your story that your new position did not afford the option if giving notice. I don't think you're wrong to leave without notice. You do what you need to do for your mental health. :). A month off sounds rejuvenating.

Have you looked into cobraing (sp?) on insurance? You should be able to work it out so you're not without insurance. Ahh!

  • Congrats on the new job and raise!

I personally would give your 2 weeks notice.  You'd still feel a weight lifted knowing you were on your way outta there, and nobody would be expecting you to be giving 100% anyway, so I doubt panic attacks would continue.  If you ever have to leave your new job, you'll want to be able to put this job on your resume with contacts to confirm your employment without having to worry about the "she just cut and ran" part coming back up...

    Awesome news though... congrats again!
  • YAY!!!! I am so excited for you!  But I have to tell you that I am with others about giving notice!  I know it would suck, and totally isn't what you want to do, but I think it is a professional courtesy.  Plus, I believe in some states you quitting without notice gives the employer some rights to not pay you some of your wages due and PTO time etc.  It may not be that way in your state, but I believe it is here!

But I am so excited for you that you got a job that you are excited about!  Enjoy your time off!

I think that's way worse than leaving without notice. The notice is about allowing them to find your replacement/transition the work load.

Some jobs wouldn't need notice as much as others. Some would need a few months notice or longer.

I feel bad that I brought that up at all. Like I said, I don't think you're wrong. I don't think you owe them anything. My concern is only for you. Maybe in a bad work environment, a clean cut is better. I haven't been through that before. Except at Noble Romans Pizza hahaha

  • @hyaline that's really what I meant to include.... Fuck those assholes, but if something goes terribly wrong with this new job, you can't depend on your reference from a short term stint at the new company. It's more along the lines of how many years you invested in this jerk company and protecting your investment. Not so much of a networking thing.

  • I totally hear you all about the burning the bridge, but every job I've ever applied for I've not had to give a reference of a past employer if any references at all.  I think once you get to a certain level (I'm director, almost VP level) it's more about who you are and what you can do for current employer than what you did in the past.  People leave without notice for many reasons, I could have left for personal/family reasons.  I have professional contacts from every job I've worked at previously that I can give as a reference in the future that can speak to the work that I've done at that job including former bosses.

This place is just too toxic for me to stay and I won't have insurance for 6 weeks, but we have enough in savings to cover an emergency ( I did just get my bonus from here, woot!  Suck it FOOLS!) and LOs 15 month well check in December.

I love you guys, you rock for thinking about me and worrying about me.  I've never done anything like this and never imagined I would work anywhere so horrible, especially at this level, that I'd WANT to do this.  It's disgusting and I hope my giving no notice sends a message to help the measly 3 people here that I actually do like.

  • Congrats on the new job!

I'm also in the give notice camp. I would at least say that Friday is my last day rather than just tell leave. That is what I did when I left my job. I didn't have two weeks to give, but I also didn't want my co workers to think I was a d-bag.

  • I agree with you re: once you reach a certain level it's a different ballgame altogether.  And yes, we've hired a high level employee where we would have never asked for or checked references.

So what are your big plans for your month of freedom??!  I think a month is a really good break.  Two weeks isn't enough IMO.

  • Do you have a portable drive?  Be sure to take some work with you for your portfolio.  Most companies do not allow you to take work for your own use, but allow use for a portfolio.

  • @willy_gert where I can see the laws about paying me for my PTO? I have one week of PTO I didn't use and it's only November 5 so I guess I won't cry too much if they don't pay me for the measly 2 days I've worked in this month but it would be nice to get what's due to me if it is due to me. Thanks!

Congrats!!! And yeah, usually it will say in your company policy that they have to pay you for unused PTO - I'm not sure what the laws are but that is typically standard practice. Also, if you give notice, they might actually walk you right out (I think that's also fairly typical of that job level) - so might be worth seeing what happens. I totally get where you're coming from though - I once cried with relief through an entire exit interview, I was so excited to be getting out of the job I had just quit!

Look at your employee handbook.  That is where it should tell you what they do.  Also, if you have a "friend" in HR that you can ask off the record, I would.

  • Yay!!!! I'm so excited for you, @MommaP12. Congratulations. From the sounds of things you've worked your butt off to get out of the place and you earned it. Enjoy your month off! I'm excited to hear what you end up doing with your time.

Also, speaking to what @willy_gert said, she's right that certain laws will allow for companies to hold back your unused PTO if you didn't give a two week notice, but I don't think it's really common practice. They have to prove a lot of different points for them to get away with it legally and sometimes it's just easier to let you walk away and pay you your PTO. I wouldn't let yourself get super concerned with that issue. Just do as she mentioned and check your employee hand book!!

I can't wait to hear how the individual you give your notice to reacts!!

    Congrats!

Regardless of your asshole boss, will your coworkers be stuck trying to piece together your workload? If an extra day or two would be useful to them, I would offer that time at least. I would probably go into with "This is my notice. If you need me to stay and coordinate my workload for a couple of days, I can. Otherwise, I would like to make today my last day."

That company is run by and filled with assholes and I am ecstatic to be gone. I appreciate all your support and well wishes and @miss50 I will toss the job bouquet to you but drinks on me in the meantime!
