What is a "travel system"?

I hear lots of people say, "don't get a travel system, its a waste of money and bulky, etc." but then in practically the same breath they will recommend something like the britax b-safe seat and b-agile carseat...isn't that a travel system? If not, then what is?

Re: What is a "travel system"?

  • A baby travel system is a pre-packaged set that includes a baby stroller, an infant car seat and a car seat base. The infant car seat has a handle that allows it to be used as an infant carrier. The car seat base can be seat-belted into a vehicle, then the car seat / carrier snaps onto the base for travel for the parent to move baby from car to destination all while strapped into the same carrier. The travel system is for sleeping infants, since it eliminates the need to actually remove the sleeping baby from the car seat. The car seat / carrier also snaps onto the travel system stroller frame for added convenience. I have no info on the britax system since I've never used it. Some travel systems are notoriously cheap... ie: the 8 wheeled strollers that are priced low but impossible to push.

  • Except take out the notion that babies should sleep in the car seat, dangerous and not recommended.

The reason STMs would rather pick an infant seat seperately than the stroller, and get an adaptor is often the features, bells and whistles and ease of use on both products are what draw them, after finding out what worked and didn't. My experience with the strollers that came as the travel system to be junk. Also, the infant seats that came with some are notorious for not fitting a newborn correctly and safely. The Snugride (22lb limit) that comes with some of theirs has high bottom slots on the seat, and don't tend to fit until 3m shirts, and often there is no front adjust. The Baby Trend seats (across the board) have this problem too, don't fit newborns correctly. Safety 1st Comfy Carry, if it's not the Elite version, has rear adjust harness and I think those are worth avoiding simply because of that feature.

I wouldn't consider that Britax combo (B-Agile is the stroller btw) to be a true travel system as they are normally sold seperately. I've played with it in store, and while it didnt' work for me I actually liked it better than the Baby Jogger City Mini (the bar on the basket of the MIni got in the way).

I learned to pick strollers with features that worked with our lifestyle, car seat compatibility never factored, until #5 as we used convertibles from birth. #5 got a Snugride 35, which was compatible with our Phil and Teds.

I always use these pics to show why I prefer an the combo of an Infant Carseat + Snap N Go Stroller Frame over a "Travel System."  Look at how much more bulky the Travel System is.  You wouldn't want to haul out that big stroller just for a quick trip into the store.  And you also would want to push that up to a table at a restaurant.  But the snap n go?  It's lightweight and much more streamlined.  I used it all the time in the first year for quick trips.  It also extends the practical use life of that infant seat.  Once baby gets to be 15-20 lbs, you won't want to be hauling that infant seat around all the time.  But with a snap n go, you just lift it out of the base in the car and stick it in and roll!  So much simpler.  Then after baby outgrows the infant seat, you can invest in a good lightweight stroller that meets your needs.  Oh and don't buy a new Snap N Go.  Get a used one on CL or at a consignment store.  These things really don't take that much abuse so second hand is no big deal.  Do NOT buy a used Infant seat though (you don't know if it's been in an accident)

This. Also I like the Valco Snap better than both of these. It's lighter and has a bigger basket. You can purchase a car seat adaptor for it as well, and next year you can buy air tires.

If I were a stay at home mom I would do it that way if I were to do it again.

Having 2 little ones 19 months apart I'm happy I went with the Snap n Go stroller to start with, as I now use that everyday to get the boys into daycare. I'm able to carry or hold my oldest's hand while pushing the SnG into daycare. I can leave the stroller there & there is no way I'd leave a good stroller there.

I really think what you select should really reflect your lifestyle and plans. You may want to try car seats in your car first before you commit to anything as not everything fits in to every car.

  •  Yeah I LOVED my Graco travel system, used it through 4 kids! I actually have my eye on that Chicco one posted above-my current youngest is 10 so the Graco is long gone.
  • I have a b-agile with a b-safe car seat. It was really amazing and I wouldn't put it in the tier of other travels systems.
I have had friends with their travels systems (Graco/Babytrend/Chicco) and they were hard to navigate, close, were huge, etc. The b-agile was easy to close, store, maneuver.

  • The Britax is not like other travel systems.  It is a great stroller that they made into a travel system by adding their car seat.  Most other travel systems (graco, Chicco, Evenflo etc.) have junkier strollers, but the car seats are really nice.

The stroller from that system is very poorly rated.
The current Graco or the Chicco? I have my eye on the Chicco Neuvo, how is that ranked?

My old Graco (purchased 1996) was so awesome, it was indestructible. I like the travel systems because it's so easy to take the baby out of the car and put onto the stroller-so nice in inclement weather. I didn't have one with my first (they weren't invented, lol) and there's a difference.
