12 month sleep regression?

LO is 12.5 months old and I am at my wit's end with his sleep...at 11.5 mos, he started STTN for the most part for like a week--he would sleep from 7/730 to 5, wake up and cry for maybe 2 minutes, and the go back to sleep til 6/630. I thought the crying at 5 would stop eventually...but no. It's gotten worse. Now, he'll wake up anywhere from 1-4, and SCREAM as if someone is ripping his hair out. Sometimes he stops after 5 minutes, only start again 10 minutes later (right as I"m falling back to sleep). Sometimes he'll just keep going for 10 minutes, and I'l go in and nurse him. Sometimes he'll go back to sleep after 2 minutes.

After that, he will sometimes sleep til 530/6, or sometimes he'll wake up again between 4 and 5 and do the same thing. I am going crazy. I am exhausted from being woken up by screaming several times at night, and frustrated because I have NO idea what to do about it. I don't think he's hungry, as he is definitely able to go 11 hours without eating. I don't think it's teething, because this has been going on about 3 weeks and I see NO signs of teeth, nor is he any fussier at all during the day.

I have no problem letting him CIO, except that I would expect that to help him STTN after a few days of CIO--and he's not.

We're trying an earlier bedtime tonight to see if that helps. Any other ideas?

  • Ear plugs... I think the fact that sometimes you will go in, creates inconsistency with him and makes him think that if he screams a little bit louder or a little bit longer, then you might just happen to go in that time. Be consistent and he'll quickly understand the rules.

Thanks for your response! I was consistently not going in for about a week or so, and it kept happening...I would have expected it to stop by then, no?? That's what made me question the whole thing.
