Epidural headache

Any nov moms who ready had their babies or second time moms...

Did you have an extreme headache within the week after having LO? My mom claims that you can get a bad headache as the epidural leaves your body more.
Random question, but I woke up with a bad one and it has yet to leave me. Just put on stuff that is numbing my head, otherwise I wouldn't be able to even post this.

  • I've heard of it and they asked me both times if I felt poorly, but I've never experienced it.

  • I am one week postpartum (tomorrow), and have not experienced any headaches.   I do every now and then experience an achy feeling where they placed the epidural.  However, it is not so bad.
  • I did not have that after DD was born. Or any side effects at all.
  • Awe, no experience but I'm sorry. I just had a really bad migraine (maybe we were sharing) and I slept for four hours, I couldn't imagine getting one while LO was here. I hope you can work it out because headaches/migraines are the pits. Love you <3

  • I had it.  It started when I was ready to leave the hospital.  It's called a lumbar headache and is caused because you are leaking spinal fluid post epi.  You feel totally fine laying down, but the moment you sit up it HURTS.  I couldn't even go to the bathroom.  3-4 days after leaving the hospital we were in the ER and they gave me a spinal tap where they took blood from my arm to clot the hole in my back to stop the fluid from leaking.

That being said, I do plan on having an epi again. However, if I have that kind of headache after having the baby I'm demanding they take care of it before I leave this time.  It got progressively worse for me as the days went on so I didn't think much of a headache before I left the hospital considering I was operating on little to no sleep.

  • If it is true a spinal or lumbar headach the blood patch is supposedly the way to go. Do you have any history of migrains? I do and the anestethiologist (sp?) said after birth it might be hard to tell if it's actually from the epidural or hormonal changes bringing on a migraine. Usually I've heard they come sooner than this though. I'd get a very specific list of symptoms and call your doc or L&D and see what they say. Feel better

  • if you dont have a history of migraines then I'm going with the lumbar headache too.  if you've had migraines in the past I would call your OB.  they can get you on the mini pill sooner than your 6week appt to help regulate the hormone roller coaster.

  • Ditto to what fiddlefern said. If it's wore when you stand up it is probably a spinal headache. You may need a blood patch. Increase your fluids because if the leak stopped you will still need to replace fluid. Call your doctor and they can make recommendations. Hope you are feeling better soon.
  • Spiral headache. My friend had it and was beyond torture for her- she got relief by going to her chiropractor. May sound odd but if I get one that's what I would do first!
  • Spinal *** headache
  • I had a friend who had the lumbar headache that fiddlefern described,  It didn't go away til she got the treatment for it.  I think it was days? maybe a week? before she realized it wasn't a normal headache.  I hope that's not what you have.  It sounded brutal.  FX you feel better soon!
  • I'm sorry you're dealing with that. I don't know how common it is but I had heard of this and it's one reason I had reservations about getting the epi.

If it is such a headache it sounds like you're better of seeking treatment as soon as possible.

    Good luck and congratulations!
  • Just agreeing with ff and pp. So sorry it is happening, but say something bc it is a relatively quick fix. Much love to you and your LO! Xo
  • I'm sorry love! I hope you feel better - thank goodness you have such an AMAZING hubby that's helping you out!!! :-*
