Question for STMs from a FTM.

How often do you bathe a newborn? I know you have to wait for the remaining cord to come off, but after that how often did you give your LOs a bath?

Hope this topic hasn't been posted yet, if so just point me in the direction of that link. I usually just lurk.  ;)

Re: Question for STMs from a FTM.

  • I can't remember for sure. Soap once a week? I could be way off base. But I think a water bath every day is ok, just not soap every day because it's still to harsh for a newborn's skin. Same concept as dogs. But please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • That's what we did and what our hospital teaches. Maybe more like every few days in reality though.

  • I think they told us 2 to 3 times a week. Sponge baths until the cord falls off.
  • I think we bathed DS no more than every 3rd day when he was a newborn unless he was particularly stinky.

  • I'd wipe him down at least once a day with a wipe just to keep him fresh, but an actual bath was every couple days.

  • After the cord came off we bathed every day (soap every other) and did lotion in the morning and after each bath. After the nath we had a routine we did from the start to help them sleep too. I woukd only ise the lavendar scented lotion at night then bottle/breast while rocking and singing her goodnight song. I think it helped in the long run to make dd such a good sleeper. (STTN at like 6 or 8 weeks) But that could also be just coincidence. We will see how that same routine goes for this LO.
  • We did every 3 days until the summer (DD was born on Valentine's Day), when we switched to every other day. We stuck with that until this summer, when it became just about every day because she gets sweaty and dirty playing outside.

  • I think I did every other day unless she had a blowout.  Usually they were just quick baths, a quick wipe down with a soft cloth and out.  A total of 5 minutes?  I used a gentle goats milk baby soap 2x a week. If I remember correctly anyways :)

  • Usually every other or every 3rd day.  Very little soap needed at that age anyway.  We still pretty much bathe her every other day at 2 years unless she's been in the dirt, etc.

  • YOu can do sponge baths before the cord falls off. Every 2-3 days is probably fine. I still wash my kids every other day unless they get really dirty one day, otherwise their skin can get dry.

  • We started with every other day when the cord came off. DD was a messy eater, so she always needed a good wipe down. We moved to every night as part of a routine to help wind her down - she was a tough baby at night.

We would wipe down her face, neck and hands with warm water everyday but only did a full on bath about 2 times a week and we used Earth Mama Angel Baby shampoo which is super gentle. You don't want to dry out/irritate their skin.

  • Wow, I have no idea! There are so many things I have forgotten over the last two and half years and it sucks. I'll need a quick crash course in newborns again.

This. My son only showers e/o day except in the summer when he is disgusting daily.

  • We gave DS a sponge bath every 3 days, and I don't think we gave him a sponge bath at home until a week after he came home. I just wiped him up. Like others, he still gets a bath/shower every other day, because his skin dries out.

  • Every 2-3 days as a newborn, and eventually as DS started moving around I have him a bath everyday! I just put cream on him more!!

  • By the time my little guy comes home his umbilical cord will have fallen off. I'll probably bathe him daily (just because I love the smell of the baby shampoo and I heart a clean baby). I did this with my daughter when she came home from the nicu, too.

In fact, Emma still showers daily because she's to the point where she needs deodorant and all that fun stuff.

  • Because my kids loved baths from birth and didn't have skin issues we did bath every day with soap only 1 or 2 a week. We still do that except most days its a shower for them.

  • When DS was a newbie, it was every other day, and most of the time we only used soap on his diaper area. Now that he is two, it's a bath every day! Between playing and eating, he'd be going to bed a yucky mess otherwise

  • From the time her cord stump came off DD got a bath every night. It helped give her a routine and she loved her bath (in the evenings that was probably the only thing she loved). We continued that for about a year, now it's every-other, usually (sometimes daily in the summer) and even though she's always had lots of hair, I've never washed that with every bath (except when she gets sweaty), I just wash it as needed. A lot of her baths when she was younger didn't involve any soap at all. She just liked to lay in the water and kick her little feet and have water poured over her belly.

  • Probably about 3-4 times a week. We didn't start doing nightly baths until DS was about 7-8 months old, right before he hit that 9 month sleep regression phase. Up until then, we were doing baths every other day.

  • Mostly every other day.  It's actually Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays, that are bath nights here, but it's close enough to say every other day.

Couple times a week at most. Or after a diaper blow out. You might want to do a warm wash cloth around the neck between baths of they get stinky cheese neck. Between spit up and dribbles from nursing or bottle feeding that can happen. We started doing a bath every night at about 6 months as part o DDs bedtime
Just lost it over "stinky cheese neck."  HA!

  • Thanks so much for all the info, ladies! :)
