Toddler Shivers?

My daughter has what I call "shivers".  I see it usually once a day, if that much.  She will stop what she is doing and tense up, sometimes her face grimaces.  It will last about 2 seconds and tonight it lasted 3 or 4.  I don't know if it's pee shivers or something else.  Has anyone else dealt with something like this?

Re: Toddler Shivers?

  • To me it sounds like the pee shivers but the one thing that sounds a bit concerning to me is that she seems uncomfortable/bothered when it happens. Do you have any warning signs that it's about to happen? It might be a good idea to try to get it on video and have the doctor take a look. It could be that she is in pain from something if it's stopping her in her tracks.

  • My DS started doing this around 11 months old and still does it occasionally at 13 months.  It's not the pee shivers for him.  At his one year appointment, the pedi said that he hears of lots of movements like this and not to worry unless it seems like it could be seizures.  But it doesn't interrupt play time and it only lasts a few seconds at most.  The best explanation he gave me was the nervous system developing and that babies do a lot of strange movements.  When he does it, his upper body tenses up and it almost look like he grits his teeth.  Hopefully it'll stop soon because it always freaks me out, but it doesn't seem to bother him!

  • Thank you for the replies. She doesn't so much seem bothered by it since she keeps on playing after it happens. I think the grimacing is part of the tensing up. She's a happy, super smart girl and has been very healthy so far. I am going to try and get it on video.
