Now that Halloween has passed and the Christmas stuff is coming out in full force, I am trying to start thinking about what to get DD for Christmas. What are your ideas so far?
I have a couple of booths that come with stuffed animals so far. MAybe a couple developmental toys and an ornament for her first christmas? I don't want to go too crazy cause I know she will get spoiled anyhow!
We're trying to stick to simple toys, college fund contributions and time spent instead of money. So, my aunt (who was a missionary and doesn't have tons of money) can give her an experience like a trip to the children's museum and my parents can do something like wooden blocks (we like Melissa & Doug toys as well as Green Toys). And of course clothes for the next year's worth of sizes!
This year my DH and I will probably only buy 1 or 2 gifts for our LO. He's too young to actually care, so we'll probably invest in a couple of practical items. We know he'll be spoiled rotten by the family, so there's that. Plus, we all know he'll love the boxes and paper the best:)
Both families are already asking for lists for DD, so my goal this week is to poke around and find some toy ideas for that, and will also add clothes and the 529 plan option.
As for us, DH is going to make her something (no idea what yet...maybe a toy box?) and then I will probably get her something small and practical, but like others I know that family will spoil her rotten so I'm not going overboard. Just something to open on Christmas morning, more for the photo op than anything

All of this is great and makes perfect sense. I'm not looking forward to DS being overloaded with gifts every Christmas as he grows up. I can only tell them quality, not quantity so many times! lol
Homemade is a great idea, as is the 529. It's selfish, but I wish people would gift us with the money they're willing to spend and let me do it. Or respect our requests, since they asked first anyway.
I think we are going to do a stocking for DD, and then I have a nice list of bigger gifts to ask for from grandparents/family. . I'm going to take advantage of keeping things simple while we still can, but still am excited for her first Christmas.
TTC since 2008. I'm 30/DH 32. Unexplained Infertility. All Welcome!
Unmedicated IUI: 9/11 BFN
1st IVF: January 2012. BCP, Lupron, Menopur, Gonal-F 7 eggs retrieved, 5 mature, 3 fertilized, 3dt 2 grade A embryos.
Beta 13dp3dt = 6. Beta 16dp3dt = 9. Chemical Pregnancy.
I think that we are also keeping gifts from us pretty simple this year but grandparents have been asking for a list and I just don't know what to tell them. What kinds of ideas are you giving the grandparents?
we'll probably do a little stocking with some toys, and then it depends on where she's at developmentally .if she's walking at that point we'll get her one of those poppers, and maybe some sort of activaty thing. 1-2 gifts, like everyone else said she's going to get spoiled by everyone else. we'll let her open our gifts too so she can have fun with the wrapping paper
I'm setting up an account on Amazon.com for her and registering for stuff we'll need for 9-18 months....like clothes, some books, maybe some sort of arts/crafts i can do with her (paints and butcher paper kind of things) and developmentally appropriate toys as she gets older...
Actually, on the whole roll of "not wanting DD to get spoiled" my idea every christmas with her as she gets older is to do some donations of old toys. Like, she can pick 5-10 of her toys she doesn't really play with anymore, and together we'll go and donate them somewhere. I figure it'll be a good lesson for her as she gets older, plus less crap in my house (my parents will spoil her so much it'll be sick. everytime she goes over there she comes back with a bag full of new clothes..ive bought exactly 3 outfits for her in her 8 months of life)
Little Riley-our first little girl coming March 1st, 2013 (or sometime around there;)

Either something Micky Mouse because she loves Micky Mouse Clubhouse or that hugging elmo doll. Other then that we really are not going to get her much. Maybe wrap up a few outfits (that she will need anyway) just for photo ops.
We're going to do a stocking with a board book or 2 and some socks or other little clothing and then one or 2 boxes under the tree for DD at our house. I know she'll be insanely spoiled by all of our family (first grandkid for DHs parents), I just hope some of them give us practical items. We don't have a lot of storage space in our townhouse and DH hates clutter . . .
A Christmas tree for us and her. Also her first ornament. Other than that, all practical is what I will tell family. Being as she's growing too fast, I'll probably ask for 24mos+ clothes. I don't see a need for a thousand stuffed animals or toys that she'll play with for a couple weeks then bore with them.
Maybe I'm lame, but I'm planning on wrapping up some boxes and letting her open them. That will entertain her way more than any new toy would. I am doing a stocking, but probably won't put much in it this year. Next year, we'll go all out. I just want to enjoy this time and not stress out about it.
Our LO is getting a new car seat! Ok, well...maybe not what was on the top of his Christmas list! But...it is needed as he's growing so fast and he won't really know much about Christmas gifts this year anyway!
I know I may be opening myself up here, but I can't help it. I am so excited for by little boy's First Christmas that I've got a nice pile of stuff stashed away. Nothing crazy, but we bought him his first truck, a couple Melissa and Doug puzzles, his first bath toy and a few other small developmental toys. It may just be that my little one is at the right age where xmas will be failing right as he turns the 9 month mark and would need these types of things to keep him busy anyway. I put the grandparents in charge of books, PJ's and clothes.
