Thoughts and prayers: what do you mean?

Serious question, not being snarky. When you say "thoughts and prayers" and you are religious, do you seriously pray for that person, even though you don't know them, or is it just a way of expressing sympathy?

I'm not religious at all, so I'm curious. When I say I'm thinking of someone, then I mean it - I am thinking about that person and what they are going through, and I hope they are doing okay. I know some people hate the phrase "I'm thinking of you" because it sounds empty, but I do mean it when I say it.

Right now I'm thinking of cupcakes.

  • I'm religious I have a little good thoughts prayer that I say when I send out my thoughts and prayers.  Also we say night prayers and I will sometimes add others to the end.

  • I'm not religious, but when I say that I tend to say a little thought for them and send it off into the universe. I definitely have people I don't "know" in my thoughts when they're going through tough times too. I like to put positive energy out there whenever I can.

This. Couldn't have said it better.

  • When I say T&P, I do say a short prayer and keep them in thought throughout the day. I also try to check in, even a quick text, to just see if that person needs something.

  • I am not religious, so I purposefully avoid saying "prayers" or that I'll be praying for someone.

  • I am not religious, but I do send best wishes, or positive thoughts. I think it doesn't help - but it won't hurt either.

Also, studies show that people who KNOW they are being prayed for have better outcomes, so I count on that if nothing else.

  • If i say I'm praying for you I will do it. I usually do it right then and there. Real quick and simple prayer. I try to remember everyone again while I'm at church too.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

  • If I say thoughts and prayers I mean it. I am religious but not big on praying, so it's more the thought. I am also someone who will cry for someone I don't know.
  • Thanks for the replies. Nice to see.
