MOTN feeding

For those of you who are no longer doing a MOTN feeding how did you break your LO of it?

At my 4 month apt the pedi said she should no longer need to be fed then. Honestly her best feedings are the one before bed and the MOTN one. All the other day time ones I feel like I am wrestling her to eat.

I figure I will probably keep doing the feedings through 6 months, but after that I probably should try weaning. I'm sure at this point it is just a habit.

Re: MOTN feeding

  • Tommy still wakes up once during the night.  He eats an entire bottle, so I figure he needs it.  He just turned 5 months on the 31st.  I figure around 6 months when I start solids I will try to break him of it, but how I am going to do that is beyond me.  My older son was a terrible sleeper until he was about 10 months old. A bottle was usually the only way we could get him back to sleep. Tommy was a better sleeper from the start though so I am hoping it will be easier for him.

  • DS would eat 3x a night if I let him. I am trying very hard to get him down to one MOTN feeding. If he wakes before midnight I send DH in his room to soothe him because if I go in there he has to be nursed.

  • My LO went from STTN to 4 month sleep regression/rolling/sitting up. It's been a long 2 months of 2-3 MOTN feedings. He is EBF and the only way to get him to go back to sleep is to nurse him.

Last week he STTN back to back two days and last night only woke up once. Whenever he wakes up I look at the video monitor to see what he is doing. If he is still laying down then I wait to see if he will fall back to sleep, but if he is standing up then I'll nurse him.

He always softens my breasts so I know it is more than wanting a comfort suckle. And I don't mind helping LO boost his weight gain.

  • With us, I just had to stop assuming he was hungry when he woke up. Before I fed him, I'd snuggle and give him a paci-- if he went back to sleep then I knew he wasn't hungry. After a while he stopped waking up for a MOTN feeding. Even now, if he wakes up and wants to eat I feed him-- but it's just not the first thing I try.
  • I have no personal experience here, but both my mom and mil say the babies just eventually drop them on their own. I think if they are actually taking a good feed in the motn they still need to eat at that time. If they are waking just for comfort sucking its more of a "sleep" issue problem which you might want to wean them of.
