Cost of LC appt?

Has anyone seen an LC for an out-patient consultation? If so, may I be so rude as to ask generally what it costs to see an LC?

My insurance won't cover it, and the lady I spoke with at the LC dept at the hospital could only tell me that they charge by the 1/2 hour, but she had no idea what they charged. I want the appt, but I don't want to be blindsided with a $1000 bill or anything like that.

  • I suspect this will vary by LC and by area. Call the hospital again - maybe ask the billing department? Or get in touch with your LLL chapter.  You should not be blindsided by a bill, they should be able to tell you before you go in.

  • I hadn't thought to call the billing department! I've got a call in now, so hopefully I'll hear back this afternoon.

@petdocd that is awesome! FX that its something totally reasonable like that here!

  • I have been quoted 135 and 225 for in house visits.
  • The LC was in my room while at the hospital speaking to a new mom, she said it was a 35$ charge. She didn't say how long.
  • The range around here is $75-150/hour. Is there a free standing birth center near you? I've found they have the least expensive rates and better hours.

I'm not aware of any birth centers, but I haven't looked for any either.

  • Mine is covered under insurance, so you might look into that! I have friends that work at pediatric Home Health who also do lactation. They are coming to my house to help me.

  • They came to see me daily at the hospital but outpatient they are $35 here. I haven't needed one so not sure how long or if insurance covers or not.
  • Does your pediatrician's office have an LC you can meet with? I know I can set up an appt to meet with just the LC and I just have to pay my co-pay. The pedi's office also offers a free BF support group every week that is free of charge. Have you checked into anything like that?

  • Mine is free for a year through the hospital I delivered at.
  • I saw "the" LC in NY and it was $240 plus unlimited follow up. In 3 days we got LO up 2 oz. woo hoo! My insurance says they'll reimburse, we'll see.
  • I live in DC, and I was quoted $150 for in-office consultation, $200 for in-home and $60 for phone.

  • Okay I just heard from the hospital. They bill insurance $85/ half hour. If my insurance won't cover it and I don't get a contractual discount, I could possible get a discount to the self-pay price of $57/ half hour.

So, not great, but probably (hopefully...) worth it.

  • Look into "crunchy" baby stores. One by me has an LC that works there and is only like 35 bucks. Also, some pedis have one on staff.

I'm on an individual plan that is grandfathered in, which I guess means it isn't going to change, which kind of sucks. I've been wanting to get on the health care exchange to see if I can get better coverage for a decent price... But we all know how well that's going! Haha!

  • We have a free breast feeding clinic at our hospital with certified LCs available everyday of the week. You can just walk in anytime.

  • Man, some of you all have a really nice set-up with LC availability. From what I can see, the LC at the hospital is my only option.

  • My LC is threw WIC. She is free, I'm pretty sure that you don't have to use WIC to use her either. ;)

  • WIC offers free LC's to all nursing moms, whether you are on WIC or not. I'm getting a free appointment this week.

  • Our LC is $30 for 30 minutes and $60 for 60 minutes.
