Dreaded membrane sweep...

Do not fear the membrane sweep ladies!!!!!!!!!

Okay.... well I know it hurts like heck for some people. I went into it today thinking it was going to be the worst thing ever because of a thread on here. But- there is hope!! It wasn't any worse than the internal exam I was already getting.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents out there- it's not necessarily going to be god awful- that had seemed to be the consensus that I had read here. My attempt at helpful advice.... :) Good luck mamas!

Re: Dreaded membrane sweep...

  • My understanding was not that it hurts to have the procedure done, but that it can trigger painful cramping, not actual contractions, over the next 24-48 hours. I'm interested to hear your experience.

I would be willing to try it next week (past my EDD) so good to know that the procedure isn't necessarily scary bad.

Thanks, good to hear. I was reading "Expecting Better" and of all the 'natural' induction methods (ie, walking, sex, nipple stim, epo) membrane stripping is the only one with data and research to back up some success. I was thinking I was going to let dr. do it (because they are going to induce at 39 or 40w) but I was hesitant before reading there is some evidence it works and your post that it's not the most painful thing ever.

  • I had mine done Last week and will have them done again tomorrow at my 39w appointment. It was mildly painful but the pain was over once she was finished so I didn't think much of it. It didn't hurt bad enough to stop me from getting it done again.

I lost large amounts of mucous (tmi) fir three days after ward and had some mild spotting.I'mhoping that tomorrow's strip will set of labor since last week's didn't. I'm 4cm 75% effaced so I'm pretty frustrated with the fact that it didn't work. At least I know that LO will be here in the next three weeks lol

  • Good to know it's not always HORRIBLE as they've talked about doing it as early as tomorrow for me.

  • I started a lot of the natural methods at 38 weeks- Walking, EPO, RRL tea, Nipple stimulation, sex (well last week for that since DH has been out of the country)

Today is my due date so my doctor went ahead and did the membrane sweep... hoping for results because I really don't want to be induced.
  • Doc stripped my membranes last Tuesday and I went into labor the following day.
    It was not painful.

  • Had mine done on Friday and was not even a little uncomfortable.  I was 4.5 CM and 80% thinned- baby at +1 station, so I think that has something to do with not hurting.  Dr told me if you are not progressed and cervix is high it can be uncomfortable.  I also had no cramping or no increase in contractions and as you can see no labor :(  Dr practically all but guaranteed it would work since I am so far along and have been for awhile, but alas she was wrong.  Having it done again today.

I tell people my uterus is like Disney World.  Happiest place on earth.  Who would want to leave :)

  • I had it done today and it didn't hurt at all. Try doing IVF or FET and having a catheter stuck in there with a full bladder. That is way more uncomfortable than having your membranes stripped.
IVF, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle.

  • I've had it done at some point in all my pregnancies and it only ever hurt really bad once.  But I was in triage at L&D at 39 weeks because I hadn't felt the baby move all day (but no contractions or anything) and the dr checked and I was 5cm and said he'd strip them.  It was worse than natural childbirth.  I about came out of my skin and wanted to crawl off the top of the table.   I seriously thought his hand was about to come out of my throat it was so far up in there.  And he ended up breaking my water in the process.

I've never been so dilated when I had it done at other times nor has it ever been so vigorous--so I think a lot has to do with how gentle your doctor is in doing it.

  • I had one with my second son and I didn't think it was that bad either. Yes it is uncomfortable but not horrifying!!! I ended up going into labor a day or so after the procedure which kept them from having to induce me thank goodness!!
  • Just had mine done for the second time. I'm not going to lie, it was alot more painful the second time around but the pain, again, stopped as soon as she was done, so still no big deal. Let's hope for a baby!
