Nurse Practitioner Appointment

My first appointment isn't until Dec. 4th when I'll be 9 weeks.  That's the absolute soonest they could get me in.  I'm a first timer and the appointment is with the nurse practitioner so I'm just curious as to what it entails.  My DH wants to take the day off work to go, but I don't want him to if it's just medical history questions.  Can any experienced moms tell me if they will let us listen to the baby's heartbeat or anything else exciting like that?

Re: Nurse Practitioner Appointment

  • It really depends on your doctor. Some will do a dating u/s but that isn't a given. Sometimes it's just a "confirmation" appt to get your history, etc. You should call your office and ask.

  • At my first appt on Friday we are doing an ultrasound and medical history.  Fingers crossed we hear the heartbeat but it might be too early!
  • It depends on the practice.  Some will do an ultrasound, some will just do a pelvic exam, bloodwork, etc.  At 9 weeks it will likely be too early to pick up a heartbeat on doppler like they do later in pregnancy.

Last time my first appt was at 7 weeks. I only met with a nurse to go over medical history and had blood drawn for the lovely panel of bloodwork they do.  My first visit with the doc was at 8 wks 5 days where I also had a dating u/s.

This time I have a completely different healthcare system and I still have a 7 wk appointment with a nurse, but I already went in to the lab for blood work.  I'll see the doc at 9wks including a dating u/s.

I wasn't told what to expect last time so I was pretty bummed to just meet with a nurse (I think it was actually just a med tech).  H went with me, but only because I was too sick to drive safely.

  • If you are trying to decide whether it's worth your husband taking time off, you can call the office and ask what they routinely do at the first prenatal appointment.

  • I figured I would call in a few weeks before going in, but I'm anxious.  Lol, maybe I should now.  I'm hoping they will do a dating u/s because my lmp was Sep 22nd, but I didn't O until Oct.16th.
  • Like others have said, it really depends on each place.  At my OB's, we go over medical history and previous births, they do a pap and breast exam and send me over to the hospital for some blood work.

  • Mine isn't until my 12th week (December 12), and it's pretty much a paperwork, lab, and "how are you going to pay us" appointment, but then they'll schedule an ultrasound.  My office doesn't have an ultrasound machine, so I go to a clinic closer to home to have that done.

  • I think the first appointment is nice because you usually get to have an ultrasound done and hear the heartbeat. Other than that its just the basic questions and blood work for some.
