3rd Trimester

weight gain and loss in third trimester

Is anyone slowing down on weight gain in the third trimester instead of speeding up like all the articles say you should?

In the first 12-13 weeks, I gained about 15 pounds! And I was so nauseous! Five of those pounds came on before I even knew I was pregnant. I literally have no idea how I puffed up so quickly because I remember eating almost nothing but oranges for weeks straight!

In the next 13 weeks, I gained about 13 more pounds, bringing me to 175 pounds.

Now, about 6 weeks, later, I weigh 172 pounds. My BELLY is getting bigger, and I am getting smaller everywhere else...so odd.  I was put on the diabetes diet about 4 weeks ago and am eating healthier than I have this entire time.

I have two more months to go and am wondering if I'm going to gain any weight at all, seeing as I've lost weight over the past 6 weeks. I was borderline average weight before this began (147 pounds for 5'5"). I am eating a decent amount of food too, so I have no idea what this weight gain/loss is about. It hasn't seemed to correlate with what I'm eating through this entire pregnancy (except 2nd trimester - I was really chowing down then!).

Re: weight gain and loss in third trimester

  • I have gained more in the 3rd tri, but when I was dx with GD, I went on the diet, lost a few and then stayed steady for quite some time. I was a very early dx, so this all occurred in the 2nd tri for me. The diet really made a difference. Don't know if its the same for you, but thought I would share.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.

  • It seems like you've gained a healthy amount of weight so far.  I wouldn't worry too much about what the scales say.  Talk to your doctor.  He/she will likely be more concerned with fundal (sp???)  measurements and baby movements than your weight at this stage.
I'm on baby #2.  As with the first one, I'm slimming down in some places, mainly legs and butt. This is primarily because I cannot exercise and thus build/maintain muscle the way I like.  (grrrrrrrrrrr......It's. pissing. me. off.)  My belly continues to grow.
Also, you may not be able to eat as much as you did in your second trimester. (The baby is taking up more space; pushing your stomach up towards your boobs etc) Your baby needs as much or more calories than she/he used to, but you're consuming fewer.  Hence, the baby is growing, but you're not gaining excessive weight.
I think you're fine.  Bring this up with your doctor though, just in case :-)

  • I am in the same situation, I put on 15 lbs in the first 20 weeks and then since then have only gained 2lbs. Doctor said this is completely normal, weight gain will not necessarily be consistent or follow any sort of pattern.  As long as belly is growing and measuring correctly, shouldn't be anything to worry about.
  • It sounds like your diet change may have forced your body to shed any excess weight you had.

If you start to lose rapidly, then there might be an issue, but talk to your OB if you are still concerned :)

  • Everyone gains differently. I gained 4lbs first tri, then 2lbs a week during second tri, and am now gaining 1lb a week. My OB said my body is just doing what it needs to do.

  • I have HG so my weight gain is not the norm, I went down 10lbs in the first trimester, I maintained during all but the last two weeks of the second trimester, and from the end of the second to now (36+4) I have gained back 6lbs. From last week to this week I have not gained so I am unsure if I am slowing down again or if I just didn't gain this week.
My doctor also said that so long as growth is progressing normally there is no real concern about the pattern of weight gain. Some women gain more in the beginning then the end and visa verse.
