for a nb: baby k'tan or maya ring sling?

Which do you prefer? I will have a 2.5 year old when #2 is born. I have a Boba, but would like something more cozy during the newborn time. Thanks!

I have a K'Tan and I love it. I can't compare it to the sling since I haven't tried it, but the K'Tan works perfect for me and DD. It fits her nice and snug to me and isn't bulky or too warm of a material. Best purchase I've made so far.

  • I've loved my k'tan since DD was 2 weeks old. Didn't use a RS with her until 4 months but at that point I still preferred k'tan. Just now at 5 months is she getting too heavy to love the k'tan.

  • I would see if you have a babywearing group near you so you can try out both.  The Maya wrap will "last" longer although the k'tan is "kozier" - the k'tan sizing is really whacky though (runs large) and they stretch badly - you have to wash often to keep it fitting properly.  But you can get them used very cheaply.

Thanks guys! So do you think I should order a size down for the k'tan?

  • Also, not sure how big your babies tend to be, but DD was only about 5 lbs, so pretty much the only thing I was able to use at first was a ring sling. I use it less now, but it's good for when I'm doing something and DD wants to hang out with me and watch (she can sit on my hip).

  • I'm a size Large in shirts and have a medium in the K'Tan. It fits perfect. And DD started in it at 7lbs and is now almost 9lbs. I wear her chest to chest with the bottom of the wrap under her butt and her feet sticking out. Seems to work the best for us.

I don't have experience with a ktan but my dd loves to nurse in the sling. I have to use one hand to support her head but I can cook dinner and go for walks this way. She doesn't tolerate the chest to chest anymore (12 weeks) but she used to sleep great this way. I'm excited to use the hip carry when she can sit up better
  • i love my k'tan and didn't have any issue with sizing. it fits perfect and super cozy and snug. great for the newborn stage.
  • For me, out of those two--the Maya. The K'tan has a pretty short shelf life (it will likely start to get saggy at 15 lbs) and you have to get the fit more specifically. The Maya will be great for a NB and even for toddlers who want lots of ups and downs. But, your best bet is to see if there is a babywearing group near you to try out some things and see what works best for you.
