Waterbury Hospital vs. St. Mary's

Hi ladies,
I'm very newly pregnant (6 weeks) with our first child!  My doctor said that they are willing to deliver at Waterbury Hospital or St. Mary's (also in Waterbury).  I have no experience with either--does anyone have any input?

  • I have no experience maternity wise st either, but otherwise I would absolutely say St. Mary's!

  • I delivered at Waterbury and I have no complaints.  The ward is clean and the staff is attentive.  The rooms are nicely sized.  The recovery rooms are big; they used to be shared but now they are all private, so they are spacious enough for 2.  I also like the location of this hospital better than St. Mary's and I feel like I have to mention that at St. Mary's doesn't have free parking*, Waterbury does.

*I have only been to the ED dept at St. Mary's and they did validate my parking HOWEVER there are signs everywhere that say parking is not free so I'm not sure how they would treat an extended stay.

  • I delivered at St. Mary's and had a good experience.  My doctor who I love only goes there.  The one thing I would check, not sure if you are religious but I think being a catholic hospital you may have to think of what they will do given you are in some situations you obviously don't want to think of.  I honestly don't know the choice you have but I have heard people mention things.

  • Thanks for all the info!  :)
  • My dr would deliver at either but said waterbury was better, so that's where I went. It was okay. The nurses were nice, but didn't feel I recieved as much postpartum help as I was expecting. I delivered in the evening and about 3 hrs later the nurses left us for the rest of the night (until morning) because the labor side was really busy. I also felt they really pushed formula, and had to ask multiple times to see a lactation consultant (there isn't always one there)

  • At my tour of St. Mary's they told me that they do not allow birth control, c-sections, vasectomies or abortions because it was a Catholic hospital. I switched OBGYNs because I didn't want to deliver at a place like that.

I delivered at Danbury Hospital and it was the best thing we could have done. The nurses are amazing and supportive.

  • I will say they do c-sections at St. Mary's so not sure why they would have told you that.
