2 month shots

Did anyone give their lo tylenol before you went to the appt? How much? I think my dr mentioned to give her tylenol before but I can't remember how much. I will call tomorrow but I just thought I'd ask what you guys are doing.

  • I just don't understand why you would give LO Tylenol beforehand? what if your LO doesn't even have a reaction to it? It could be totally unnecessary. You can always give Tylenol afterwards if needed. I bought some just in case, my LO was totally fine and didn't need it.

Yeah, I thought it was weird too. I think that's what he said though! I will prob just have it on hand if needed later.

  • I agree with PP's... This has been discussed a lot. My LO didn't have a fussy day after shots and didn't run a temp so it wasn't needed after all. I wouldn't give your LO an anticipation does because you don't know what their reaction is going to be, they might not need it.

  • No Tylenol before or after shots for us. He did have a very low grade fever later that evening, but wasn't too upset so I just let it run it's course. He was perfectly happy by the morning.

  • I had to give LO Tylenol after her shots. She was in visible pain. I know the Tdap shot can hurt a lot.
  • My pedi told me not to give Tylenol as a preventive measure. However, she said it was okay to give it afterwards if needed. We talked about the correct dosage (it is based on weight).

LO was clearly in pain all day, extremely fussy, and ran a fever. I waited to give him a dose until night time when it was clear it was necessary.

I would only give Tylenol if it is needed. You don't know how your LO will react until the shots are given.

  • The first set of shots (delayed schedule) we did it after the shots. She was running a low grade fever and extremely sore ( didn't want to be moved, touched, no tummy time, bicycle exercises, diaper changed) and fussy.

So I did it before hand (on the 2nd set of delayed vax) and was told to give it right before hand because of her reaction to the first 2. It sucked, but the actual visit and sticks sucked much less the 2nd time. Luckily, I was able to get her to conk out as soon as we got home.

When the Tylenol wore off she was running a 101 fever, sweats, crankiness, lethargy, finicky eater, the whole kaboodle. :( at least she didn't mind snuggles this time.

My girl is one who reacts to vaccines, I guess :(

  • No Tylenol before shots. The pedi said if necessary we could after but in our case the only symptom was the slight fever. I am the type of person who doesn't like to over medicate and LO was like his normal self with a slight fever so I found no need to give it after. Now if he had other problems I would have thought about it.

I think first time around nothing before but if your LO has a severe reaction then you could ask your pedi if they advise Tylenol before the next set of shots.
  • The dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) is 15 mg per kilogram of body weight. So for a 6 kg infant that would be 90 mg. it is given no more than every 4-6 hours but as always this should be confirmed by and recommended by your pedi.
