Dropping a pumping session

DS is now about to be 7 months.  I think I'm going to drop one pumping session at work.  Currently I pump at 9am, 12, and 4pm.  I'm a teacher so pumping during the day is extremely difficult... it really would make my life easier if I could just pump at 9am and then 4pm.  I know I'll get less milk - but I have ~450 oz in the freezer I can supplement with when needed to send the 12 oz each day to the caregiver.

How old was your baby when you dropped a pumping session at work?  Did it cause a significant supply drop?

Re: Dropping a pumping session

  • He does not STTN, he wakes once or twice.

He gets a bottle at 3 and even though I am done with kids at 4 I usually don't get to leave work until more like 5 so nursing him at 4 isnt an option.

  • I'm not sure if your work schedule allows for this, but could you pump at 10 and 2?  You could drop down to 2 pumps a day, but they aren't spread apart so much, so your body might respond better than that long stretch between 9 and 4 as you originally mentioned.

This would be my vote. I am a teacher too and I know its not always easy to schedule it in though!

  • No, unfortunately I can't do 10 and 2.
My conference is 1st period which is 8:30 - 9:15, and then I pump in our advisory period which is the only time I have someone to cover my class and that's from 11:45 to 12:15.  My lunch is 12:15 to 12:45.  After that I don't have any time at all until 4:00 when the kids leave.

I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to have someone to cover my class, so I will have to start pumping during my lunch if I don't drop a session.  Not sure how I'll have time to use the bathroom, heat up food, and pump (obviously I'll have to eat while I pump)!

Thanks for the help guys!  Honestly the pain in the (rear?) that pumping is and having to be dairy free I'm just ready to be done with this.  I don't mind breastfeeding at all when I get to actually breastfeed, but I LOATHE that pump.
  • I was pumping 3 times a day at work and dropped to twice at 5 months.  My supply hasn't dropped at all over a month later, but I'm still pumping every 4-5 hours.
