Any cloth diaper mamas out there?

Just curious how many of you are already planning on cloth diapering. I already cloth diaper DS and never thought I would love it so much. Just curious what you plan on building your stash on.

Re: Any cloth diaper mamas out there?

  • We CD DD, mostly with AIOs (they're the ones DH was most excited about). Plan is to do the same for this one, too. Most of our diapers are sized (xs, s, m, l), so we shouldn't need any more... It's a little embarrassing how many we have as it is, but hey, they'll come in handy.

  • I cloth diapered for a while with DS. Pocket diapers were my favorites! I gave my stash away, though, so I'm going to need to buy some more. What brands/types do you use?

I CD DD for about 6 months maybe? Started this past February/March and she was just potty trained in September. I can't wait to CD a baby and build my stash since its pretty pitiful. DCP won't CD though :(

  • I really want to CD.  DH does not want to do it, but I want to do it.  My mom said she would bet money on me giving up and not doing it.  I kind of want to prove her wrong. :)

  • We use CDs. We didn't start until DS1 was one because we were gifted SO many disposables. He's potty trained now but we use them on DS2 & definitely planning on CDing this one. We pretty much stick to pockets, we have a few non-pockets but they only get used if I'm running low.

  • I want to learn more about cloth diapering. It seems like a good idea but I want to find out more about how it works. DS is in regular diapers and we've spent so much money on them I don't even want to think about it.

  • I cloth diaper DD and plan to with this LO as well.  We are working on PLing right now so we're using a mix of CDs and training diapers.  We have had good luck with Best Bottoms all around.

  • Me!  We started when DS was 2 months.  When he was tiny, we used covers and prefolds.  Once he turned around 6 months we switched to mostly AIOs with some pockets.

  • Ok my answers to the above questions.
    1. My DH was against cloth diapering too when we first started because he thought it was gross. After cloth diapering he feels so different and event tells strangers about it lol.

    2. Cloth diapering can be as cheap/expensive as you want it to be.

    3. My main brand of diapers as a newborn were fuzzibunz in a size small and I loved them! But I hated their onesize. The majority of my stash is Kawaii and Bumgenius. For Bumgenius watch for seconds sales. I have never been able to find a flaw in any of my seconds. Kawaii I runs different sales throughout the year. I have many other brands too. I primarily use pocket diapers. But I have about 1 of every style :)

    4. Washing is not that hard. It is like doing an extra load of laundry (with 2 extra rinses)

If you have questions feel free to PM me :)

I started it with DD about 10 months due to peer pressure (see above)...not really :) I did it to save money which it has, but I have HE front loaders and the diapers are very difficult to get clean due to the small amount of water the washer uses and get build up unless I wash them 4 millions times (actual about 4-5 times) so it is very time consuming for me.  I've tried every trick in the book.  I will not be cloth diapering the next one....I think...

Oh and my favorites are my Alvas

  • We CD'd M (now potty trained). H really liked the Nicki's Best Bottom system, where you have a shell and a snap in pad. The sizes fit M from infancy to toddler, so that was nice, but I think I almost liked just using regular covers and pads better than the specific inserts. I made some wool covers that I loved, so maybe we'll use more of those this time around.

However, the daycare M is at doesn't permit CDs. It didn't matter since he was PT'd when he started there, but now we'll have to figure out whether it's worth it to do some combination of cloth and disposable.
  • Me!!  We use CD's for DS, he's 2 and a half now and hopefully will potty train before our next baby need the diapers.  We use Bumgenius and Kawaii Baby diapers, we probably won't buy any new for next time around...unless we have a girl.  I'm sure I won't be able to resist those cute prints!
  • Hey all you mamas who cloth diaper! I have an (admittedly silly) question. I'm pregnant with my first and seriously want to give cloth diapers a try! I have done a ton of research and I think I'm pretty good on theoretical knowledge...I now have a functional question :)

Can you walk me through a diaper change? I've changed many diapered bums in my life but never with cloth. I have questions like...what do I do with the poopy diaper that needs to be rinsed in the toilet while I'm still finishing up the diaper change? How do I haul the baby and the diaper to the toilet for a "flush?" Do I keep the diaper pail by the changing table or by the toilet? How do you change a cloth diaper in a public bathroom when the changing table isn't in a stall?

I know these are silly, but it's always the details people! Plus knowing how you do it will help me be less afraid of this...intimidating process :)
  • We've been CDing for almost 2 years and I love it. We didn't start until DS was about 2 months old, so I think I want to slowly build up a small stash of nb AIOs just to make things easier. I suck at prefolds. I'll probably try to get a dozen BG nbs, 4 more kissaluvs, and maybe splurge on a few Twinkie Tush tiny tush dipes. It's sad, but I'm really excited about getting more fluff.

  • @dcarter85 it's very similar to a regular diaper change. If DS has a poop, we put the diaper to the side of the table until he's cleaned up and fully changed, then when we're done, take the diaper to the bathroom and spray out the poop. We keep the diaper pail in the bathroom across from his room, so after its rinsed out, we just plop the diaper in the pail. We wash the diapers every other day. It's very easy. Wen we're out, we'll usually toss the whole thing into a small travel wet bag. If its not to crowded I'll plop the poop in the toilet and flush. Easy peasy.

What @sparkleboot said. You definitely want to get a diaper sprayer. Ours has been broken longer than it ever worked and it annoys me a lot. It's not as bad now that the poops are mostly solid, but I use disposable liners to help until DH finally gets around to fixing it. It can be overwhelming in the beginning, but it's really not that much more work than changing disposables. Bonus is that I see a lot of posts about toddlers taking their diapers off and that doesn't seem to happen with CDs :)

I think when you have a baby, you suddenly grow multiple arms. Like an octopus. I have no idea HOW you do it, you just do. And every scenario is different, so you just sort of do what works at the time.

<-------- Not good at practical advice.

Definitely just diy! It only adds 2-3 loads of laundry to your routine a week. Like you said, there's much better ways to spend money than having someone wash your dipes.

Yeah...unless you have a very demanding job, it's really not that difficult to launder them yourself.

This is why I've had such a hard time, but I know some other people who have no issues with the HE washers.  Best of luck to you!!

Yes, we CD'ed DS from the time he was born until starting potty training this past June (with a 5-month hiatus when we lived in our camper; it was just too much trying to go to the laundromat every 3 days).  We started with XS FuzziBunz and also used gDiapers and Sunbaby and later on Bumgenius.
For those who asked, it's not a whole lot different from using disposables (except for all the waste you're not generating).  All you do is plop the poop in the toilet, rinse if necessary, stick the diaper/insert into the laundry bag (we used cloth diaper pail liners), and wash every couple days depending on how many diapers you have.  I think this time around I'm going to try flip covers.
