Sippy cup question

I have read that it's ok to give a sippy cup at 6 months... But how much? How often? What are y'all giving your little one in their sippy cup?

I'm assuming I'm just stressing too much about this - but don't want to overdo what I give him in his sippy cup if there is such a thing. :s

Thanks!

Re: Sippy cup question

  • I recently read that at 6 months you can start to give them some water but no more than 2 oz at one time and no more than 4 oz per day.  Other May Moms please correct me if you don't think that's correct. I would also ask your pedi to be sure.

I wouldn't give anything besides breast milk/formula and possibly a bit of water.

  • We tried the Tommee Tippee sippy cup labeled 4+ months when M was 4 months, but she just chewed on the spout. She refuses bottles though, so she probably didn't know to suck on the sippy cup.
I actually thought the spout on that particular cup was tricky. I tried it myself and definitely had to suck to get anything out.
I was hoping to use sippy cups as an alternative to bottles, but we may just have to wait a little longer until she's ready for it.

  • DS has been toying around with the Nuby one for awhile, probably since about 4 months.  We had received some other ones as baby shower guessing game gifts, but he seems to like the Nuby one.  The spout is closest to that of a bottle, and the handles are easy to grab.  He likes to hold it and chomp on it, and he's just recently starting to be able to actually tip it in his mouth.

The only sucky thing about the Nuby one is that it cracked after one fateful fall from the table.  I'm thinking that maybe a sippy cup shouldn't be so effing fragile.

  • We use the "take n toss" sippy cups with a mix of breast milk with some water, 2-3oz total, for him to practice between feedings. They are cheap and have handles he can grasp easily. Been doing it 2-3 times a week since he was 4mo.
  • I am giving a straw cup with water. I don't want to waste BM. Once he starts actually swallowing I will give BM. He can suck a bit of water out but it then pours right out of his mouth.

This is what we've been doing as well

  • My pediatrician said we can start with an ounce or two of water in the sippy cup at six months just to get LO used to it.  I assume that would be just once a day to start.
