Any Parents of Non-Specific Diarrhea Children? At Daycare?

Hi all, long story short: husband and I work full tie so son goes to daycare full time. In March he brought home a bug and we all got the poops, even grandma, we all got over it but not our son. He just has diarrhea a lot. I've had to pick him up from daycare several, a lot, of times because the state says if they have more than three it's because they could be sick and need to go home. Well, we've been to our pediatrician (he's also a GI specialist) twice about this and his conclusion was it's non-specific diarrhea syndrome, or Toddler Poops. Daycare was not satisfied with this answer so we tried Dairy free, no change, we did gluten free for almost two months and no change. To appease daycare even more I got a second opinion and that Dr. agreed with the first doctor and that he son had the NDS until about 2.5 years and then he just grew out of it. Well, daycare has told me they are on the verge of kicking us out because it's becoming "unsanitary" and things had been ok for a while because NDS is not contagious so they just assumed my son had the poops when he had more than 3 a day (with NDS 6-8+ B.M.'s a day are common). I got a call today, not from the usual gal, that he had 4 and we needed to come get him. If the state (we live in Utah) says no more than 3 but my son has been diagnosed with this NDS am I being forced to be a stay at home mom or what? Does anyone else have any children with NDS that successfully go to daycare? Help! :(

  • He does have at least 1-2 non solids at home on the weekends as well, sometimes more. He will have a change of clothes maybe once every two weeks so I don't think it's going "everywhere" just having blowouts. I am meeting with the director tomorrow. Not really sure what to say?! :(

  • You can also contact your state office of licensing (or look up their website) to find out the regulations regarding exceptions being made to their medical policy.  All daycares are licensed by the state and their are regulations about sending sick kids home, but their are obviously cases where exceptions are made for issues like yours.  Since they are private company, the probably don't have to accommodate "special needs" but I would imagine some other daycare would work with you on his needs.

  • Thank you all! I spoke with the director and she thinks we should still do a gluten free diet and re-evaluate at the end of the month and if I got a note from the Doctor saying we are doing so I wouldn't have to pay for the food so I called the Dr. and his assistant, after she spoke with the Dr., got back to me and said the Dr. suggest s a blood test for some allergies, and if that results in noting then there is another test we'll do. Why he didn't call for this in the first place is beyond me. I relayed this message to the Daycare Director and she was very happy and said if all comes back normal then they'll put a note in his folder that it IS just toddler poops and to deal with it (took the words out of my brain). We'll see what happens! :)
