Suckers?

My hospital put on my packing list for my hospital bag "suckers". I was trying to google why I need these and all I got was gross questions from men about sucking their wives breast milk. No thanks. I was going to ask my doc Tues what these are for, but now I really want to know what I need suckers for. Does anyone know why they would put this on the packing list, it seems random to me and I haven't heard this from anyone else.

Re: Suckers?

  • My midwives recommended honey sticks instead of suckers but same difference and ditto Devynn. I don't know that I could have held a sucker or Jolly Rancher in my mouth during labor - I needed to be able to breathe out through my mouth.

  • Ok that makes some sense! My doc said nothing about it so when I saw it on the list when I got home I was like Hu? Now to go buy suckers and pray to god I don't eat them before I leave to the hospital. My sweet tooth has been RIDICULOUS lately. Thanks for the info. I'll let my husband know it doesn't mean he needs to suck my breast milk after all!!! Lol!
  • Ooh! Honey sticks sound really good! Is it sick that this is slightly making me look forward to labor?
  • Also for dry mouth from heavy breathing:)
  • Mine provides Popsicles for the same reason. Seriously best Popsicle I have ever had!

  • My mom gave me suckers while I was in labor and they just made me feel like I was going to throw up a few minutes later.... They tasted good at first though :)
  • They recommend suckers for the same reason previous posters have said. They also like it to be a suckers because it is something with a handle that can be taken out of your mouth during contractions vs a piece of candy.
  • Can't get past men sucking breastmilk. Sorry.

I know I googled "suckers and labor" and I got some crazy info that was making me throw up in my mouth. Gag.

  • I was told them & Popsicles anything on a stick since I can't eat much during labor. So I've got my dum dums and banana Popsicles in there!

  • It's to help with sugar levels when you can't eat during labor and a coping mechanism to help you concentrate on something other then your contractions. Well that's what I was told by my dr at least.

This and it help get some saliva going when your mouth is dry. My hospital said you could also do hard candies but the sucker is less of a choking hazard.
