Baby Clothes in Hospital

Okay, this may be a dumb question. If so, gif away. But first answer my dumb question please. I'm packing my hospital bag and every list says to bring a going home outfit. Got that. Now, on to my dumb question...Do they need clothes for the whole time they're in the hospital? Assuming we end up staying the normal 2 days, do I need to bring clothes for those 2 days? I would assume that she will need something to wear, but none of the lists say anything other than a going home outfit. Do they not wear clothes in the hospital normally other than going home? Does the hospital just provide a couple of plain onesies? Should I bring some footed pajama type clothes for her to wear during her stay? Clearly a FTM question.

Re: Baby Clothes in Hospital

  • It depends on your hospital/birthing center. Our hospital provides little snap-tees and diapers making it easier for the checks they do. The only clothes we need to bring is something to take LO home in.

In my birth class they said our hospital provides everything except the going home outfit. They do shirts and diapers and blankets. So in my case I'll only bring the going home outfit. They did mention to bring something else if you want for pictures.

  • Our hospital provided little snap tees and onesies. But my son was already too big for newborn clothes so I had to have my husband bring some from home.

  • I prefer just the long sleeve t shirts they have for baby in the hospital.  I find it makes all the frequent checks easier and it's easier for me unwrap baby and stare at his/her cute little toes and belly and legs and such easier.  I also like that it doesn't bother the little baby lojack device clamped to their umbilical cord stump.

A friend of actually prefers onesies because of the baby lojack--she feels like it gets bonked around less with a onesie holding it down.

    Total choice of personal preference!

  • Ok, thanks everyone! At our tour they said that they have everything for the baby, but I wasn't sure if that just meant essentials like diapers, blankets, etc. I'll double check with my doctor on Monday. I will probably just let her wear what the hospital provides until her going home outfit for comfort/ease's sake. I also plan on a lot of skin to skin during feedings and cuddles, so I don't need her dressed in a lot.

  • The first time around I did bring clothes and she wore them. The snap shirts don't really keep them warm. So I had some onesies, an outfit for her hospital photos and a going home outfit. We brought our own pacifiers and stuff as well.

  • Just keep in mind the hospital aintcha boss! If you wanna dress up your baby- dress up your baby! :)
  • I brought clothes for my first two. I preferred to use my own clothing but it wasn't necessary. I felt like the stuff we brought was softer and for some reason that made me feel better...crazy Mom hormones probably. I did prefer two-piece outfits for the reasons stated above. The umbilical cord will be checked and it's just easier. I also preferred things without feet and just used socks because they had to prick her little heel :(

I liked seeing my baby in clothes I bought, so yes,I packed several outfits when dd was born, and for this LO as well.

dd was 5lb 12 oz when she is was born and ended up needing preemie sized clothes, so I recommend bringing at least one thing in preemie, nb and 0-3 because dating ultrasounds suck and they never ever estimate the weight properly. You never know what size your baby will be.

  • Ditto to the things without feet. Not just because of the foot pricks, but because I can say from experience some babies have giant feet. ;) DD1 was 7lbs even, swam in her NB outfit but her big giant feet didn't fit in her clothes (my H wears size 13, poor kid has dad's feet!)

  • Ditto what everyone else has said. I think generally hospitals provide a tee shirt, diapers, a blanket and a beanie for the baby. If you want to bring things to dress the baby in, then by all means do.

  • Our hospital provides everything for the 2 days we are there but said that if we wanted to bring our own that the gowns with fold-over mittens are what they prefer and that they wont change them out of these for check ups. Theyre open at the bottom making it easy for diaper changes and checks and the fold over mittens don't get torn off or lost and actually keep baby from scratching themselves to death. I packed two of them, if they get dirty I'll deal with what the hospital provides.
