Can dogs sense your pregnancy?

I've been having this really weird experience with dogs since announcing my pregnancy.  We're not dog owners, but I teach private voice and most of my students have a dog, and since telling the families it's like the dogs know.  They come into the room where I'm teaching, circle my feet, and sit down next to me for the duration of the lesson.  I told DH about it and he was intrigued and wanted to know if any of you have experienced something similar.  Doesn't count if you own a dog and YOUR dog does it - but can your friends' or clients' pups sense your pregnancy?

  • Idk why it "doesn't count" if you own a dog or not. They most certainly can sense it, no questions asked. If dogs can smell cancer in people than they absolutely know if you are pg.

  • The owning a dog not counting thing was DH - this was posted on his behalf. Silly husbands.  I think his rationale is that it's different when you live with an animal every day, versus an animal you see once in a while.  But that's also coming from non-pet owners, so take it with a grain of salt.

  • I am not sure if my dogs know. We haven't had the conversation :), but our girl dog has been a lot friendlier to me than normal. She will also sit and stare at me, which kind if weirds me out. The boy dog has always been partial to me, so it's hard to tell.

  • Yes. My neighbors dogs kept sniffing me one day which is something they don't normally do. My dog actually became defensive of me. At that point no one knew I was pregnant yet. I knew that there was the possibility but hadn't taken a test yet.

  • My dog definitely knows something is up. She's constantly sniffing my stomach, and always wants to lay her head on my stomach when she sleeps. She's always been kind of clingy towards me but she's gotten increasingly defensive, not aggressive, she just doesn't like people being near me like she did before.

  • Our dog acts the same as before getting pregnant.  She loves to follow us around and sit on top of us.  This isn't anything new so we aren't sure if she can sense my pregnancy yet.
  • Mine have no clue! They are in for a big surprise. Both their both boys and we all know how observant guys are:)
  • I don't notice any difference.  Dogs that are not my own don't seem to notice and my dogs are acting pretty normal.  They are little corgi cling-ons anyway, so there isn't really any difference now.

  • I don't know about dogs, but I think my cat knows. He's always been cuddly but he is pretty much glued to my side. He also likes to sleep draped across my belly or curled around it. I know he felt LO kicking the other night because his ears would twitch almost every time I felt a kick. I'm not sure if he knows a baby is coming, but he knows SOMETHING.

  • They can tell. They can smell the scent our bodies give off and it changes when we are pregnant. I think as we get bigger and the baby gets stronger they can hear the heart beat. My puppy has become super protective and always wants to cuddle.

  • Hi all, I've never actually posted on here, FTM 22 weeks staying team green for now. My two male dogs don't have a clue. However I have encounter two friends' female dogs both on separate occasions and they have come up to me to sniff my belly and cuddle on it! I think dogs deff sense it, especially girl dogs!
  • Yep, my dog will not leave my side. He only is this attached to my side when I am pregnant. He normally sleeps in his bed on DH side of the bed, but now sleeps on my side. If I get up to pee he wakes up and follows me to the restroom. God forbid I don't let him in with me. During the day I have a toddler and dog in the restroom with me.

  • My lab doesn't seem to have a clue. He treats me like he always has. There might be something to the girl dog post above; girls just have better intuition.

  • My cat definitely knows. I swear as soon as I got my BFP I noticed her constantly lying on my belly. Weird!
Also my friend whose housemate has a female dog recently miscarried and the dog didnt leave her side for a few days.
  • My dog knew the day I found out!! He is very over protective of me more now then before as well.
  • Yes, dogs and cats can sense it.
I don't think it's necessarily true that males don't notice.

With my first LO, I stayed at a friends' place. They said I would not be bothered by their cat at night because it hated people.
It slept with me every night. It followed me all day. It was male.

With LO#2 my ILs have 2 male cats. They always avoid me. And they hate each other.
They would take turns laying against my belly or on my lap.

This time, I have a male kitten who normally doesn't snuggle me. But he has decided they he will lay as close to my belly as possible.
And the ILs cats are doing the same. I'm surprised they haven't made the connection yet. They probably won't.
    Lol.

I've had friendly female felines also. As well as dogs, but most of my family and friends have cats.
  • My dog definitely knows. He hasn't left my side since I became pregnant. Usually, he is always with my husband.

  • My cats definitely have changed since we found out we were pregnant. They want to be around me or sitting on me all the time.
I kind of feel bad that they have no idea what is in store for them in a few months. Lots of crying and late night and early mornings.
Hopefully they will adjust quickly though.

  • My dog knows, he is normally a floor sleeper and ever since I got pregnant, he sleeps next to my belly every night, all night. He also growls at hubby if hubby rolls over and tries to touch my belly. He's totally my bump guard dog

  • I have two dogs (10 year old Jack Russell Mix- Willow and 5 year old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix with Aussie-Izzie)  and they def know I am pregnant. When I am home Izzie just be by my side at all times, she is more aware of everything going on around her and me, and she is more protective over the household. When its bed time Izzie feels that she must lay in bed with me and my partner, between my legs with her head on my belly and willow must lay by my feet. Talk about a crowded bed!?
