I'm a little delayed in posting our birth story, Aya is now 1 week old! I still can't believe I finally have my little angel face in my arms. I apologize for the harsh read, my brain's not functioning at normal levels yet.
Here's our story:
My pregnancy was not a very difficult one. My first two trimesters went perfectly well, but once I hit 27 weeks I was hospitalized for threatened pre-term labor. I spent 3 days in the hospital trying to stop the contractions and receiving steroid shots to develop her lungs in case we ended up with a premie babe. Luckily, she decided to stay in and bake a bit longer, but it meant mom had to take it easy and I was out of work for 9 weeks. Those 9 weeks were relatively uneventful and I kept wishing they would just let me go back, but my midwife was firm on her orders of no work until 35 weeks. That was probably for the best, because two weeks after returning, I went into labor!
At work Thursday night (10/24), around 7:00 I started contracting. I wasn't too worried about it. They were intense, but not to the point that I thought we should go in yet. However, I work with a bunch of guys, in a clean room and they got a little over anxious when my friend started timing my contractions at 3-1-1. I had had an appointment that morning and found out that I had dilated from 2cm to 4cm within the previous two weeks. All of that information combined, had my Lead kicking my BF and I out and straight to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital around 8pm and I labored in and out of the tub for a total of 18 hours. By about 10pm I had dilated to 6 cm, but by noon on Friday labor had stalled. My midwife initially thought we might be able to break my water to get things going again. It turned out that, under the circumstances, (38w +light contracting) that would be considered inducing labor and against hospital policy. So we were sent home to wait for contractions to pick up again, not knowing whether it would be hours, days or weeks.
The rest of Friday was fairly uneventful, as was Saturday. I was beginning to think my little stinker was going to play tricks on mama. After being over-anxious to arrive, she was now going to make me wait 4-6 weeks to meet her. WRONG! Sunday morning (10/27) my contractions picked back up and we were on our way to the hospital again.
They did end up breaking my water around 11am (7cm dilated) in hopes that it would help labor progress more quickly, given my family history. I was initially against having my water broken at all, but after our Thursday night adventure, I was ready to have a baby. I caved, gladly. After 7 1/2 hours of completely med free labor, Aya Rose was born via natural water birth at 2:42pm, Saturday, October 27th. She weighed 7lb 3oz and was 19 1/4 inches. She has a full head of thick dark hair (accounting for mommy's massive acid reflux issues) and from the moment they placed her in my arms, I cannot imagine my life without her.
It was by far the hardest and most painful thing I have ever done, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. It really is crazy how quickly all the pain fades away once they plop your new born babe on your chest. I was given quite a lot of pitocin after, as I was bleeding rather profusely. I also have a 2nd degree tear that had to be stitched up. SO WORTH IT.
Congratulations to all you mamas with outside babies and good luck to all of those still waiting.
If you read through all of that, you're an angel
