Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

at what point is it not normal...

...for a toddler to be cranky after an illness?  DS was sick M-W, but has been fever-free since Thursday and diahrrea free since Friday.  However, he has yet to be cranky-free.  The kid has been a hot mess, with pretty much no improvement.  He spent the entire day today whining and crying.  Nothing made him even somewhat content. Now I know when I'm sick I feel a little yucky for a few days after that, but I don't know at what point it's just feeling yucky, and at what point it's something else wrong.  (I know you all don't know for sure either, but what has your experience been?  This is only the 2nd time he's been sick, and he recovered almost immediately the first time).

Also, he is asking to go to bed and take naps (never happened before, and on top of that he asks to sleep an hour or more earlier than normal)

  • He might be going through a growth spurt on top of everything or teething too. I don't know when it will go away but I'm sure that it will, just give him a few more days. If you can, try doing something new or something that you don't do very often with him to change up his routine. That's helped us before when LO has had a few rough days... somehow a change of scenery helps with is attitude.

And if he is asking to go to sleep, follow his cues, he knows best.

  • I felt for teeth and it didn't seem like anything was coming through, but I never thought of a growth spurt!  I just worry about waiting around if it's some kind of secondary infection that's bothering him :/

  • Your LO may still be getting over something, but keep in mind too that he's been coddled and held and babied all week while he was sick - which he probably really liked.  It may take some time to get back into the swing of things for him too.

  • He might still not be feeling 100% even if it seems like all of the symptoms are gone.

Rebound growth spurts are common in babies and toddlers, especially after illnesses that cause weight loss and/or dehydration (such as stomach bugs).

Yeah, he's begging to eat all the time, so I'm starting to think he's just trying to make up for all those days without food.  He's definitely doing better now...not 100% just yet, but much better.  Poor buddy, he was pretty sick for a long time (for a kid).

  • Sounds like he's recovering and just needs a little more time
