GTKY: What songs will you sing to baby?

I was just thinking earlier this morning about what songs I'd like to sing to this LO and now I've been humming most of the day :). I thought it would be fun to see what songs make you ladies sing and what you STMs are already singing. It might help us think of some other songs to try, too.

P.S. Sorry if GTKYs can only be posted on certain days or by certain people. I was pretty sure this is a free-for-all, but I couldn't find the post where someone outlined who posts what on the board earlier this week.

Re: GTKY: What songs will you sing to baby?

  • I'll start naturally :). I plan to carry on a few family traditions and start a few new ones maybe. My mom used to sing "Baby of Mine" from Dumbo when I was little, so I've started singing it to my belly a bit, but I can hardly get through it without tearing up :').

My aunt loved to sing songs from Mary Poppins to me and my sister when we were little. I have great memories of her swinging me around and singing "Let's Go Fly a Kite."

A few new ones I plan to sing are "So Happy Together" by the Turtles, "Little Bird, Little Bird" by Elizabeth Mitchell and of course "You Are My Sunshine."

  • When I was a baby, my parents sang brown eyed girl to me. I'm the first girl on either side to have brown eyes.
My dad and I danced to it at my wedding.

Right now I'm on a Beatles kick, so I'm singing "let it be" and "here comes the sun". They calm me.

  • I sing EVERYTHING to my kiddo. My favorite is to change up lyrics and make any song fun and silly for them. Now that DD is 4 she enjoys making up her own songs, too.

If you want to sing out, sing out! :)

I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • My bump has been subjected to a lot of Crosby Stills and Nash, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young since the beginning, so I'm sure more than a few of their gems will be sung to LO as time goes by. My Dad always says that the song "Teach Your Children" by CSN was what really made him want to start a family and have kids.. I've always liked that.
  • When DS was little we sang Jesus Love Me, You are my sunshine, Twinkle Twinkle, ABC in that order when we were trying to get him to go to sleep, and as he got older he associated those song with going to bed...it worked out pretty well.

  • These are songs I already sing to my 2 year old. Baby Mine is our favorite one and our go to, we also do God Only Knows(beach boys),Because(Beatles), Hey Jude(switched to hey Luke, lol), boring Rock a bye baby, he LOVES Twinkle little Star and has hand movements for the song.

  • I didn't really have any set songs with DS but I swear when he was a baby if I sang the theme song to the Monkees he would immediately stop crying. I don't even know what made me sing that song in the first place but it was a miracle worker
  • The world prefers that I don't sing out loud.

  • I'm boring and really only sing Twinkle Twinkle or Down by the Bay to the kids. But DH has 3 songs that he sings to the kids every night at bedtime. His grandpa used to sing them to him and his brothers (and recorded them before he died! So sweet!) They are old boy scout campfire songs, I think, and a little gruesome, lol. One is called "Johnny Trebeck" about a man who makes a sausage machine and all the neighbors cats and dogs will never more be seen.  The other one is called "The thinnest man" about some guy that gets killed by a mosquito.  I don't know all the words but the kids love it and its their special thing.  Oh and he also sings the "Merrily we roll along" song to them too.

I like big butts.... I kid I kid....just could not resist thinking about that episode from friends where Rachael and Ross sing that to their child. So my point being, whatever makes baby smile, mommy will sing.

On another note I always imagined singing 'eternal flame' by the bangles to my child.
  • I'm pretty sure I'm going to sing the most random and outrageous things to my baby. I have this habit of making up songs to random tunes about what I'm doing.

A song about how I'm changing my dear LO's diaper. Yep. Definitely going to happen.

  • I am the WORST at remembering lyrics. There aren't many songs I can sing all the way through without mucking it up some how. So I have a feeling I'll sing a lot of short songs or songs that stop in the middle/trail off!

  • I've been singing a bushel and a peck all day.. Random.
I used to sing a lot of Mumford and sons to the little boy I nannied. :)

  • I sing to LO already and she isn't even here yet! I sing most anything that comes on my radio and sometimes I feel her moving in time to the song I'm singing. When I sing "Thousand Years" she often falls asleep and stops her squirming and kicking me in the nerve cluster I have in my lower back from my compressed disks!

  • I'll sing along with whatever comes on while I'm in the car (depends on the Pandora station I have on), but songs I'll actively put on to sing along with for the bebe lately include Hey Jude, Let It Be, and other Beatles songs; Pink Floyd's On The Turning Away, Iron and Wine's House by the Sea, and ... probably others, too. Depends on my mood. Last night he got a nice loud lullaby of Layla unplugged. Love Clapton. (:

I sing Skiddamarink (not sure about the spelling), Bushel and a Peck, Alouette, Do Re Mi, Twinkle, Twinkle, Itsy Bitsy Spider (his favorite) along with a few others I can't think of off the top of my head.

This literally brought tears to my eyes! I didn't think anyone even knew Skiddamarink! As a kid my mom n I (we aren't really close anymore) would sing that song and I definitely plan on singing it to our LO!
  • I am tone deaf..... Don't want to ruin my children's chance of being able to carry a tune :)
