HELP!! DD sucks at sleeping!

My DD is 7 weeks, and ever since about week 4 has absolutely been TERRIBLE at sleeping! Before we could rock her to sleep, set her in her lamb bouncer, and she would stay asleep for acceptable periods of time, waking to eat. For the last 3 weeks her sleeping continues to get worse. She will now ONLY sleep if she's tightly swaddled and held by DH or myself when we're sitting upright or standing. I have tirelessly tried every possible sleep mechanism out there, with no luck. Anywhere I set her down no matter how long she's been asleep she will wake after 15 mins, if she even lasts that long! If I let her fuss it quickly escalates to a sweaty meltdown and takes over an hour to get her back to sleep again. She does have silent reflux which she is currently on Prevacid for, but I really don't know what else to do. Even when we hold her in the night she is constantly waking every hour, sometimes more, needing to be rocked back to sleep. I have a 3 yr old DS so cannot even sleep during the day when she does. Can anyone offer any helpful suggestions? I am out of ideas. TIA!

  • My first guess is that the reflux is bothering her, and that's why she only sleeps well when being held upright. You might need to look into different medicine for the reflux, or at least talk to the pediatrician about other options.

  • Oh god, this is me too. I'm abt to have a nervous breakdown! Baby is 5 weeks and sleep has gotten so much worse. Idk if she has reflux - haven't been back to pedi yet, but other than that, I can totally relate to you. It's so hard :(

  • We have taken her to other pedi's, even our local children's hospital to rule out anything else as our own pediatrician advised. I am thankful other than the reflux she is otherwise healthy and doesn't seem to be in pain, but everyone has told me what we are doing is all we can do til she grows out of it. She's already on the highest dose of the strongest reflux med and pricey hypoallergenic formula. Other than the sleep thing we're doing okay, but I need sleep! Guess I will just have to weather the storm with the broken 4 hrs of sleep I get until she grows out of this. Reflux is terrible.
  • My lo has silent reflux and we only can get her to sleep in the rock and play. Try keeping her on an incline and see if that'll help.

  • Some things to try:
Rock n play or swing for sleep (we use the RnP at night and the swing during the day)
Swaying to classical music to get LO to fall asleep (this really works for us)
White noise to keep LO asleep  (definitely works for us)
Wearing baby during the day (DS hated it but some babies love it and yours might if swaddling works)

Just keep trying things and eventually something will work.  Good luck and hang in there!
  • Your post made me feel a tad bit better about my problems with 5w4d DD. She fights sleeping throughout the day and will cat nap if I hold her. At night she'll only sleep on my chest at an incline in bed or on the recliner. She'll do a 3-4 hour stint at night and another 2-3 after feeding. She just started Zantac this Wednesday and I've cut our dairy for silent reflux and it seems to help a little so far. Hoping it gets better soon. Hope it eases up for you, too!

  • Jake is 10 weeks. He has reflux and is now on Neocate (RX protein allergy formula).  The only place he will sleep is in his swing or on my chest.  I'm dying too.  We did Zantac. It helps some.  He still gets up every 2.5-3 hours.  It's killer.
  • This is all great advice, and also comforting to know from others that I'm not alone! I have tried, and continue to try, the swing, RNP, bassinet with a wedge... the only thing other than my chest that SOMETIMES works for a few hours is the lamb bouncer. I even double swaddled her really tightly thinking she wouldn't notice when I let her go. No luck! I am really concerned this is leading to bad sleep habits, but I truly don't know what else to do. Even if she's really tired and not crying, she will just sit there, eyes half open, until I finally pick her up, then fall right to sleep only to wake up if I set her back down. She pulled this for 2 hrs Sarurday night until I gave in and decided she needed to sleep. I guess in the mean time I'll just keep trying. Maybe when she has more active wakeful periods things will improve. Good luck to the rest of you!
