fever for 72 hrs

Our LO has had a high fever since Wed. afternoon and I took her to the Dr. on Thurs and they said to watch it for another 48 hrs.  She is still sick and had 103.9 this morning...her nose finally started running so at least there's another symptom.  Have your LO's had long lasting fevers?  DH is really worried ;(

Re: fever for 72 hrs

  • If it was me, I think I'd freak out...thats a long time to have a high fever. I would try getting ahold of her doc for sure. Have you given any fever reducer yet?

  • 103.9 is extremely high, my doctor wants to see her if she has 101. Give her some Tylenol to hopefully break or reduce the fever but you need to call you pedi/nurse line.

My LO has had a fever of 102-104 that would not break. It lasted 5 days. We went to the ER on day one and were told to wait. She started projectile vomiting the next morning, so we brought her back and after a lot of pushing from us they admitted her. She had a kidney infection.  When the fever remerged later, we brought her to the ER and just told them it had been almost three days.

If you can't break the fever, I would go back. Here they have a three day rule to cut down on unnecessary admissions. Once a fever breaches 103 or a child vomits they are supposed to admit them. We got push back from the ER regardless. The default answer was always "go home". Had we done exactly what the ER nurses told us to do, she would have been in pretty bad shape. She was already showing signs of dysfunction by the time she was diagnosed. I'm still ticked, because some of the nurses were so condescending "this is clearly your first child" "we have serious cases to attend to" " there will be lots of fevers. Get used to this"....and my favourite "it's not as if she is vomiting", said right after I said she had projectile vomited 6 times in the car on the way to the ER. Never mind that the child was covered in vomit.

Sometimes fevers just resolve, but you know best how bad your lo is actually feeling. I would go with your gut. If you feel uneasy, head straight back to the ER. If you get push back, do what feels right to you.
  • I'd go have it checked. Longest V has had fever last was 2 days. Have you been piggybacking Motrin and Tylenol? Motrin first, then 2 hours later Tylenol?

Fever that high with meds? I'd be worried. If you haven't tried meds, I'd try that first. Sometimes one or two doses just knocks it out if V's system.

What do you mean by signs of dysfunction?

@ksherwood they found elevated creatinine levels in her blood, which is a sign of kidney dysfunction. She was diagnosed after they drew urine from her bladder and again after they cultured it. She's all better now.

Edit: just to be clear, they took the blood sample first. Elevated creatinine occurs during advanced UTIs.

The entire process of getting her admitted and diagnosed was very frustrating.
  • Are you thinking of going back to the ER?
  • well she was just at 104.4, I gave her a bath and more Tylenol and its down to 103.2 - we called the Dr and we're waiting for the call back..  I have a urine bag to get a sample tomorrow if her fever doesnt break by the morning
  • @ksherwood I have no advice, but I hope that LO gets to feeling better soon.

  • Emma had a high fever like that when she had hand foot and mouth, she was miserable and it took 3-4 days until the fever reduced with the help of Motrin and Tylenol. GL hope your LO feels better soon.

  • update: Dr called and confirmed a UTI today.  She is feeling so much better since the meds. I am thankful for western medicine
  • I'm so happy to hear she is feeling better. This sort of thing is so scary when it happens - make sure you guys take some time to decompress too.
