s/o i have a big baby

all this discussion about weight and babies made me wonder if anyone is finding that their LOs are starting to slow down at all in weight/length gain?

I've heard that when they get to 6 months, they slow down and gain closer to half a pound a month instead of the 1-1.5 lbs a month and grow half an inch per month instead of around an inch a month.

just curious to see if anyone has noticed this happening yet. If S starts to slow down, I feel like she's never going to grow out of her 0-3 month clothes, and if she does, she'll be in 3-6 months until she's a year old...

  • I noticed right around 4 months that M's weight gain slowed. She's been in 6 month clothes since then and I think she will still be in them for a while. She's 5 months tomorrow.

  • yah, I haven't had to take S in for a weight check since her 4month appt, but she's fit the same clothes since then and it more or less still fits. I think she's gotten a tad heavier, and if I remember correctly they have a 6 month growth spurt, that I think she just went through since for the first time in months, she seems longer to me. I "think" we can start to put her in 3-6 month clothes, but if they really do slow down, she's not going to outgrow those clothes until she's like a year old!

  • I feel like mine has done the opposite. Ever since he hit 4 months old, he has been gaining. We're in 6-9 month clothing because of his length and just had to switch to bigger diapers because hes outgrown the smaller size. He just turned 5 months on Halloween, so we shall see if it starts to slow down, but so far, we're full speed ahead in growth.

  • @crazycoffeegirl, are you small framed? Your LO just may always be small. My friend's baby was 17 pounds at 1 year. But the mom is tiny as is everyone (including my friend's dad) are TINY.

My LO is small now but I know at some point he is going to grow grow grow because there isn't a petite person in my or DH's sides of the family.

Even though he's a big baby, his weight gain has been decreasing month to month. First it was a 5lb gain, then 4, then 3, then 2. Hopefully next month is just 1 and I would love it if he would only gain half a pound or so a month after that. I can't keep up with clothing! He's in size 12m and his winter clothes are 18 months. I'm really hoping he stays in those for a long time. He's only worn his other sizes for a month each. Such a waste!

We had already slowed down at 4 mo. At 2 mo he was 80th percentile for weight. At 4 mo dropped to 65th. Doc was happy with the slow down though. I think by his 6 mo appt he will have slowed down more. We are actually putting the waist of his cloth diapers tighter now than a month or so ago. His big belly is gone. He's getting longer and leaner. He still has major thunder thighs though. ETA: he's right on the cusp of moving from 6 mo to 9 mo onesies. The 6 mo pants still fit best. Even with fluffy butt. He moved through his NB and 3mo clothes quickly. Was in 6 mo clothes at 3 mo. But has been in these way longer. At this rate I think we will actually catch up age wise with the "age" of the clothes.

  • Our baby girl is 5 months and she is wearing 6 month, 9 month and 6-12 month clothing and size 3 diapers so I feel like she's still gaining. We will know how much at her 6 month appointment.

This is us exactly.  I was shocked when I had to start snapping his diapers tighter again.  For a while when we were still playing catch up, he was gaining a full pound a week and we'd sometimes get only a week or two out of clothes.  He's definitely leaner now and is in each size WAY longer.  I'm having to remind myself that this is a good thing.

  • @ohgrl95 - yeah, I'm pretty small to begin with and so is DH, so we knew S was going to be small, we just didn't realize HOW small! I don't mind that she's a tiny peanut, I just know that our pedi wants her to continuously gain, and I was more curious if that was supposed to continue past 6 months.

  • Both of my kids slowed down. DS gained a 1lb a week from 1-2 months then only gained 1.5lb total from 2-4 months. He dropped from 70th % to 40th.

My DD dropped from 25th to 10th% between 4-6 months and is still hanging out at 10th at 22 months old.

  • Lexie has definitely slowed down. She has been in the 14 lb range for over two months and can still wear the 3 month clothes comfortably with the exception of footed sleepers because she is too long for them. I'm pretty sure most of her 0-3 stuff would fit too. Her 6 month sleepers fit in length but are huge around her body.
    She is here! 5-29-13

  • @AllieAGame - This is what we're starting to see as well! S fits her clothes without a problem around the belly, but the length is just now starting to get a little cramped in her footed sleepers. Her sleeves are starting to get shorter too, on her short sleeved onesies, but if we can get it over her big head, they still fit.

  • My almost 17mo is only just now hitting 21lbs. He can still fit into some 6-9 month clothes. However, I'm only 5'2" and SO is only 5'7"ish. We knew he would be small. The pedi is concerned only because he only gained about 1lb from April to Oct. He did start walking in April though so I'm sure that is another reason his weight stopped. He eats 3 meals a day plus snacks continuously. Thinking he might also have a very high metabolism like I used to.
Alexander on the other hand is 5 1/2mo and can already fit some 6-9 month clothes. I know he will be small as well so I figure his weight gain will start to slow down soon. Our 2 older kids at 7 1/2yo and 10yo are both holding steady at the 50lb mark and only about 4'.

  • LO is also still in 3 month clothes and weighs 11.5lbs. But is 25 inches long so needs a bigger size for the length. Not sure if she's slowing down since she's always been pretty small
