Toy ideas

Anyone have some good toy suggestions for Christmas? The skills dd specifically needs work on is listening to directions and taking turns. We've tried elefun and it wasn't particularly motivating for her and candyland/chutes and ladders are a little too tricky for her. Any ideas?

  • DD1 has a Hello Kitty bingo game that's really easy, and DD2 enjoys playing it. I was drooling over the puzzles on Land of Nod last night, and there was a really cute wooden memory game on there, too. Oh, and we have this game called Honey Bee Tree that DD2 and my nephew love, but it is a total PITA to set up. It's cute and very simple to play though.

  • We like Hi Hi Cherry-O. Candyland was very frustrating for awhile due to lack of focus, although DD1 has mostly gotten over that as far as board games go.

I really like the Richard Scary games. Busy Busy Airport and the Busytown Game. They're less "win" oriented and a bit more about teamwork/collaboration, but still fun!

Other ones that have been winners for us are the Seuss games -- I Can Do That and the Green Eggs & Ham diner game. Although the talking "recipe" book that doles out the "orders" in the diner game is a PITA and has no volume control.

All four of those last ones were recommended by therapists as well. Another good one for turn-taking is Pop Up Pirate.

  • DS has always hated games so I can't help you there. I like lite-brites suggestions, though. When he was your DD's age we got him Geotrax for Christmas and it was the first and only toy he has really enjoyed. I made the mistake of giving it to him first on Christmas morning and he refused to even acknowledge any other gift.

We have Ants in the Pants.

Except our ABA therapist had to incorporate turn taking with that game. I had a hard time teaching him turn taking but with her help I am able to play Ants in the Pants.

You have to get all of your four ants in to win.
