Pointing

Robert doesn't point with his index finger, he just kind of reaches with his whole hand, and he has just recently started pointing to things in books and he uses his thumb. Is that bad? I point at things with my finger but that's the extent I've done with "teaching" that skill. Do I need to try to get him to use his index finger?

I do not know if it is bad or not, but Emmett points with his whole and as well. I figure it is ok because he has the fine motor skills to press any button (whether real or just looks like a button) with his index finger. Does Robert use his index finger for anything like that? (Not that I know that it actually means anything) I know that I am no help.
Yes, he does press buttons with his index finger. I didn't think of that.

  • The big deal with pointing is that the child is seeking joint attention. He wants you to see what he sees. I don't think it matters "how" they point. Just keep showing him how you point and it'll prob come.
