When you're finished with Allegiant, come in and discuss! **SPOILERS**

Okay, so I just finished last night and I am dying to talk about the ending!  Please tell me there are others out there who are done reading and want to discuss!  I have LOTS of thoughts/opinions to share!

--I hated having the book told from both Tris and Four's perspectives.  I realize why it was necessary, but most of the time, I couldn't tell the difference between their voices.  I would get halfway through the chapter and forget whose thoughts I was reading.
--I feel like the ending was completely out of left field on so many different levels.  There is no way Evelyn would have caved that easily, just because Tobias said he would have a relationship with her.  Nothing about her character suggests that she would do that.  She has been painted as a cruel dictator who left her son with an abusive father and kills people to get what she wants.  Then all of the sudden she just forgets her grand plans and schemes?  No.  It was tantamount to the totally ridiculous "confrontation" at the end of Breaking Dawn.
--We all knew that as soon as Caleb volunteered for the suicide mission that Tris would step in for him.  That was in keeping with her character and the Abnegation that has always been present in her actions.  However, this was the perfect opportunity for Caleb to make some sort of sacrifice and earn some redemption.  Why didn't he go with her?  And then in the epilogue, he still hangs out with these people who were Tris's best friends and essentially her family?  No.
--David ends up being the biggest villain in the trilogy--he kills our main character--yet we know very little about him and his motives.  We know that he loved Tris's mom, it is one of the few things we know about his character, and yet he doesn't hesitate to shoot Tris.  He was extremely flat for someone who was supposed to be evil.
--The whole plan to dispense the memory serum in the compound is ridiculous.  They're going to set it off in the city so the best solution is to set it off in the compound instead?  And the only way to get it is to go through the death serum?  With all the mental and physical power in the group they couldn't come up with a better plan?  How about attack the plane they will use to take the serum to the city?
--I understand the desire to make a statement and kill your main character, but there is a reason it isn't usually done.  Mainly, it doesn't work.  You have to have a really strong ending if you want your readers to be okay with a hero's death.  The ends did not justify the means.

Overall, I was disappointed in the end of the series.  I thought Divergent was really unique and well thought out.  There was lots of action and it kept my interest, but this one  just didn't have the same effect on me.  What did you guys think?

Re: When you're finished with Allegiant, come in and discuss! **SPOILERS**

  • Okay, so I just finished last night and I am dying to talk about the ending!  Please tell me there are others out there who are done reading and want to discuss!  I have LOTS of thoughts/opinions to share! I just finished last Saturday and was extremely pissed off about the ending!

--I hated having the book told from both Tris and Four's perspectives.  I realize why it was necessary, but most of the time, I couldn't tell the difference between their voices.  I would get halfway through the chapter and forget whose thoughts I was reading. I totally agree! And on my kindle I wish it just said at the top or bottom who's thoughts I was reading! So frustrating!
I think the whole book was all over the place and it was so different from the other 2. The politics and crap in it were stupid. Also, I agree about him mom. I would have just erased her memory and be done with it.
No. RIGHT??? Why didn't he do something right for once! And I'm so pissed off that she died!
I didn't like his character at all. And the fact that he went completely not noticed that he KILLED TRIS! Hello?????? Is someone going to throw his ass in jail or do something???
--The whole plan to dispense the memory serum in the compound is ridiculous.  They're going to set it off in the city so the best solution is to set it off in the compound instead?  And the only way to get it is to go through the death serum?  With all the mental and physical power in the group they couldn't come up with a better plan?  How about attack the plane they will use to take the serum to the city?  Like the rest of the book, this was poorly thought out.
--I understand the desire to make a statement and kill your main character, but there is a reason it isn't usually done.  Mainly, it doesn't work.  You have to have a really strong ending if you want your readers to be okay with a hero's death.  The ends did not justify the means.

It sounds like we have similar thoughts on the whole series. Loved the other 2 books, hated this one. And I was just angry when I got done reading it. I mean, seriously - make us think she died and give us the happily ever after ending we all hoped for!!! The movie looks pretty amazing for Divergent though....maybe the movies will end up being better than the books. Did you read The Hunger Games?? What did you think of it compared to this, etc. etc.?

  • I was super bummed the author killed Tris. I figured she would step in for Caleb, but I didn't think the death serum would kill her. I was surprised when she got shot, but I thought the brief scene with her mother was great (I cried).

I also didn't like it being told from both perspectives. I thought that was a drastic narration style from the first two books.
  • I agree with all your points. Was not pleased!

  • I felt like Tris's death was only meant to shock the reader. It really annoyed me. But mostly, I felt like Roth lost her voice in this last book. Like you said, I couldn't tell the difference between Tris and Four's perspectives. The whole book was such a let down after the other two. I completely agree with everything you said!
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who was disappointed.  I am excited for the movie though, hopefully it will be good.

@shakeweights, I read and loved the Hunger Games trilogy, although I had a similar (though must less intense) reaction to Mockingjay as I did to Allegiant.  It just was not as good as the first two, in my opinion.  Excited for Catching Fire in a couple of weeks!  It's almost like the authors get so caught up in the hype that they put too much into the last book and it becomes a big mess instead of a satisfying conclusion.

  • I was so mad, and I sobbed like a baby.  I can understand, on one hand, killing off Tris because I think it's more realistic than having them live happily ever after ever.  However, I hated the way she did it.  I agree that David needed to be characterized way more, and that some of the characters lost pieces of themselves in this book (Evelyn).  It kind of seemed like she got lost and needed a way to end the series so she wrote herself out of it without taking the time to do it well.

  • I agree with all of your points. I think this book was not as well thought out and left me with a lot of confusion and questions. Overall I was disappointed. The death scene with Tris and her mother was very beautiful though and probably the best written part of the book.

  • I was ticked when I finished reading it. Watching this helped explain it for me....a little bit. https://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1716300/allegiant-veronica-roth-divergent-conclusion.jhtml
Interesting interview, thanks for sharing!  It still doesn't make sense to me, and as a writer myself, I hate when authors say things like "I didn't want this to happen"--well, you're in charge so don't make it happen!  I think there were much better ways to end the series.  I also think it is hilarious that she is talking about a specific part in the book during the interview and she's like "I think it was Tris who was narrating at that point"...um, if you can't tell the difference between your narrators, how can the reader?

  • The ending made it pretty much impossible for me to enjoy the movies. I already "lost" Tris once. Why am I going to spend extra money to relive that character's death? I liked the first two but there were so many reasons I didn't like this one.
  • Just finished it today! I 100% agree about the chapters being from the different point of views, horrible! I found myself scrolling back to the beginning of the chapter to see who it was. I felt that this book was slow to get started. It was hard for me to keep my interest like the first two did. Although we all would have liked Tris to live in the end, I think it showed that she had grown very selfless and knew what sacrificing for love was. Yes, I wanted to see her and Four live happily ever after but I also found it refreshing to have a bit more I an unexpected ending.

  • Just finished! I had very similar reactions as most of you. I often forgot who I was reading as there was little to no change in voice, was disappointed that Tris dies but not emotional (which is strange for me). Etc. I also couldn't really get into the first 1/2 of the book. I felt like I just had to keep waiting and waiting for something to happen
