Knee Pain

So I recently started running again but I am having HORRIBLE knee pain - including most of my lower leg as well.  It's when I run, but it's also all the time now.  I'm even having trouble just walking normally.  I didn't "injure" them.  They just hurt really really bad.  Does anyone else have this after giving birth?  Before I was pregnant I occasionally used to get swollen knees when I ran a ton of mileage, but nothing like this.  This is actual pain!  If you've experienced this, do you have any advice on how to alleviate the pain?  I've read pregnancy might have caused this.

Re: Knee Pain

  • I've noticed since I started running again that my knees feel weird. Not super painful but just not the same. After I run they throb a bit and them it goes away. I'm sure it has something to do with being PP. Only thing I would recommend is a heating pad? Icy hot?

  • It's prob bc your knees are not use to the pavement if you took time off. You can try getting a brace to keep it supported. Also you might need new shoes. Your feet may be bigger pp and your old shoes not supporting the same. Don't know what mileage you are doing but try to not to do too much too fast.
  • I work for an ortho and was asking him about my knees (though not for running.... I only do that shit if something is chasing me- and even then it better be damn scary!). He told me it will take up to 9 months for your hips and joints to return to normal. During that transition time, your gait is changed and learning to accommodate the constant change is what causes the pain. He recommended bracing, ice, and Advil. Hope that helps!

  • While not pregnancy related, I have patella femoral syndrome as a result of my service time. I usually take ibuprofen when my knee gets really bad.

  • Your arches maybe lower since pregnancy so the running shoes that once worked for you may no longer be the right kind. What part of you knee hurts?
  • Both of my knees are shot since pregnancy. They hurt worse now than before I had the baby. Standing up is the worst but some days it hurts just to bend them. I've also noticed the knee I had acl surgery on is a lot "looser". I can feel my upper leg shifting the opposite of my lower leg. It sucks. I've been swimming to get into shape because I don't think I could take any kind of hard impact excercise right now. And I hate running.

I have not started running again but I'm also having awful knee and leg pain. For me personally, I think it's from always getting up out of the rocker while holding LO and putting all the pressure on my knees...not being able to use my hands at all. I'm 6 feet talk and the rocker is kind of low sitting. Plus the constant bouncing with LO.

Edit for spelling- I should not bump during MOTN feedings!
  • I gained 35 lbs during pregnancy and am currently 10 lbs heavier than my pre-pregnancy weight.  I've started running 3 days a week and am doing 1/4 mile run followed by 1/8 mile walk, six times each.  I'm running on a track because I ran on sidewalks once and it was uncomfortable.  And I'm running very slowly.  My sneakers still feel like they fit and I do wear inserts.  I wear high-end running shoes from a running store and have had my foot type checked.  What hurts is the insider of my knee/top of my leg bone where it connects to my knee.

I'm just surprised because while I didn't run during pregnancy, I did work out and stay active.  I've been running for 8 years about 4 times a week so this really took me by surprise.  I'll try getting a brace and doing advil.
  • Not my knees but my hip will pop, and I can just be walking. It hurts like a motherfather. Blah. :(
