Pincer grasp

DS has slight fine motor delays. The PT wasn't concerned about it since he's still on track, but a different therapist just saw him and freaked me out with her concern over pincer grasp. All the milestone charts I've seen, including the one she gave me, show that the pincer grasp is the one thing he's not doing for his age level. Are there other babies who are slow on the pincer grasp?

Re: Pincer grasp

  • He's getting re-evaluated in January. If he's not walking by then, they'll continue services, but if he's walking they'll likely stop services since that was the ultimate gross motor skill goal.

He points expertly with his right hand, at people and pictures in books, but does everything with his middle finger on his left side. She also noticed that he points his hands in toward each other when he crawls and that his feet point out when he walks - both of which the PT said are typical developmental stuff and he'll grow out of it.

It was hard to hear "These are some new things that could be wrong, but if he's walking in January it won't matter because he won't have services anyway."

  • Absolutely. The therapist today is an SLP (DS has zero speech issues) and she kept saying "I'm not an OT, I'm just guessing" about his fine motor skills. But she's wondering about weakness on his left side, since I guess it's rare for toddlers to choose handedness at this point.

  • That is an excellent point. DS always starts clumsily with his left (eats with left hand, picking things up, army crawling) then masters the skill with his right. She kept emphasizing that he should be able to write with both hands eventually. I don't know anyone who can do that!
