Trouble TTC

HSG

I was just curious as to how many people had to undergo an HSG and what were your experiences?  I'm scheduled to have one on Tuesday and the doctor said that I could experience some cramping so I should take a motrin before I go.  Is the cramping really bad or is it more uncomfortable?  Just looking for some forewarning as to what is going to happen.

Thanks in advance!

Re: HSG

  • My HSG was definitely wayyyyy better than I anticipated it to be.. I took Tylenol and ibuprofen about an hour before, I had about 2 seconds of actual pain, then the procedure was literally over with. Mild cramping the rest of the day, but nothing worse than pms cramping!

    Good luck!!

  • I'll echo what ronniesgirl said, you're going to get different experiences because it all depends on what's going on inside of you. Some women experience very little discomfort. Mine was painful because my tubes were not open. Most of the women I've talked to had mild-med menstrual type cramping. The good thing is that it's a very fast procedure, a few minutes tops. My pain was gone by the time I got off the table. There was some mild cramping the next couple of days for me, but nothing serious. Watching the whole thing on the monitor is very cool, I definitely recommend focusing on that. Take the motrin that your Dr said to & bring a pad with you. You may leak some of the fluid & the pads they give you are huge!

    Good luck!

  • I had mine done about 2 weeks ago - I felt mild discomfort while they were setting me up for the procedure - it felt like an internal exam and I did have some uncomfortable cramping.  Then there was SHOCKING pain when they sent in the contrast dye to take the image.  That hurt really bad, but the pain did not last for long.  I think it was more the shock of it then anything.  My tubes were wide open, nothing blocking it either.  Within a minute it was over and the pain was gone.  Had mild cramping but nothing I couldn't handle the rest of the day.  I also took several advil and hour before the procedure.  Good luck!

  • I had mine done about 2 weeks ago and what I did in my head before was much worse! haha I want to say it felt like medium cramping pain but I have really bad period cramps so it all depends of what you've experienced in the past. The worse part for me was…TMI... that you leak the dye that they put through, that was gross. Definitely take tylenol or something before just to be on the safe side. Good Luck!

  • I took Motrin about 45 minutes before the procedure. It only lasted two minutes and the cramping was mild. I bought a pad with me as well and then went straight to work. I had to give a presentation and had mild cramping so I had to sit maybe half way through. Looking back, it was one of the easiest procedures I've had. Good luck on Tuesday!

  • I had my HSG about a month ago and it was honestly one of the most painful things that I have ever experienced.  I had the procedure done at the hospital and not at the RE office due to insurance reasons.  If I could do it again I would have paid the extra money and had it done at the RE office.  My thoughts are that they don't do these procedures at the hospital as much as they do them at the RE office so there is less experience performing them.  My procedure lasted about 30 minutes, I took 800 mg of Motrin 30 minutes before.  My left tube is completely occluded so most of the pain was from the doctor trying to flush the dye through.  NOT FUN!!  Significant pain also when they inserted the catheter into the uterus and inflated the balloon.  I have a pretty high tolerance for pain and I was not expecting the pain that I felt.  Once the test was over I had no residual cramping or spotting.  As a nurse I will now be way more honest with my patients when performing procedures about what to expect as far as pain is concerned!
