Jewelry for Work

Kind of a silly poll for this Friday - do you wear "sparkly" jewelry to work?

I'm shopping for work clothes because I'll be going back into an office to work for the first time years and I thought I might pick up a few jewelry pieces to go with the outfits I bought. I'm not a big jewelry person, but I like a chunky or long necklace, or cool bracelet to wear from time to time.  I feel like everywhere I shopped for work clothes - e.g., Ann Taylor, Loft, Banana Republic - pretty much all their jewelry was sparkly in some way or another.  That doesn't scream work to me - it looks like party/holiday jewelry.  But, maybe I've just been wearing sweats to work for far too long and have no idea what's office-appropriate anymore.  What do you think?

I think it depends where you work. For instance, something that will fly in a media or marketing company will be totally different from a finance or law firm. My former company had a start-up feel and people were very fashionable all the time. My current company is more old-school and people are more buttoned up.

ETA: For me personally, I tend to just wear the pieces DH buys me. They tend to be more expensive but also more understated.

  • i work in finance and we are business casual here. I have a lot of jewlery from JCrew that I wear and its perfectly appropriate/many people here do. It funs up a black dress!

  • I can't bring myself to wear sparkly jewelry to work - it's too "evening" for the office.  This is the time of year where the stores start selling more holiday party attire, so I wouldn't say that just because AT or BR are selling it now means that they think everyone should be wearing it to the office.

  • I don't wear jewelry because I'm too lazy in the morning to put it on.  But my boss wears great chunky statement necklaces and rings and earring, and it's totally appropriate for our office (which is a city government office).  I think you should have fun with accessories

  • Thanks guys! I love a statement necklace - ala the ones at J Crew that pp mentioned - but for some reason if it has too many sparkles to it, I feel self conscious wearing it to work. But, I'll see what's the norm where I'm going to be working. It's the public school system so my guess is it's pretty conservative, but I might be wrong!

  • I can't get my act together enough to wear any statement pieces for work.. I have a pair of diamond earrings and a necklace from DH that I'll wear on occasion, but I feel are conservative enough that I could wear them every day and no one would pick it out.

I work at a bank and we're 'business relaxed' attire - I'm pretty sure they coined the term. No need to wear a suit unless you're meeting with a client, but khakis and a polo won't fly. Depending on the department, the style seems to vary. Sparkly jewelry would be and is fine here, just not my thing.

  • I can wear whatever I want since I'm an academic but if I were in a conservative office I would aspire to dress like Diane Lockhart from The Good Wife. Very expensive, conservative clothing and bold statement jewelry.

  • I wear simple jewelry to work, wedding ring, stud earrings, simple pendant necklaces.
