High-Risk Pregnancy

Recently diagnosed with GD

I was diagnosed with GD a couple of weeks ago.  I'm still really upset about it, but am trying to move forward.  So far I've been able to manage my numbers pretty well with diet and exercise, although I'm still figuring it all out.

My question is about ketones.  My dr is having me test for ketones every morning and I have a small or moderate amount every morning.  We've been playing around with my bedtime snack and I even tried waking up around 2am to eat something, but nothing seems to be working (I should note that this is complicated by the fact that I don't eat dairy or gluten).  At my last appointment she mentioned treating the ketones with insulin at night.  I figured we would only use insulin if my bg numbers were creeping up.  Anyone have experience with this?  It's frustrating to think of adding insulin when I'm working so hard to keep my bg numbers in line!  I can't seem to find much conclusive info/research on Dr. Google.

P.S. For the life of me, I can't seem to update my signature - it won't save!  I have an almost 2 year old DS and am 31 weeks pg with #2.

Thanks!

Re: Recently diagnosed with GD

  • I was spilling ketones with my second pregnancy. I was told it's a sign your body isn't getting enough carbs, so it's burning fat for energy. It's not usually a big problem, but in diabetics it can cause diabetic ketacidosis and in extreme cases lead to a coma. Extreme meaning large ketones every day for an extended period.

To take care of the issue, we increased my carbs at my bedtime snack, which in turn meant I needed to increase my overnight insulin (which I was already on). I was having 45-60g of carbs at bedtime - double my meals! - which was kind of nice because I could indulge a little more ;)

I know it's frustrating to feel like you're doing everything right and still can't keep things under control, but remember this is completely out of your control, it's all caused by the hormones and nothing you did/didn't or are/aren't doing. Insulin isn't fun, but it's also not a big deal once you've done the injection a few times. I'm on my third insulin-dependent GD pregnancy, and I admit I still flinch a bit at injection time, but you get used to it quickly.

  • I am a diabetic. During my first trimester they made me test my ketones in the AM. I turned in my number every week and they were good so I didn't have to do it my second or third trimester.
