Too Many Diapers?

I ebf and Dd has reflux. I have a really fast flow and she's an efficient nurser.

This leads to 3-8 minute nursing sessions every 1.5-3 hours. She's fed on demand. I also do block feeding to preempt any foremilk imbalance.

In a 24 hour period, we go through 12-16 diapers. They're not all very wet, but DD screams if she's got a slightly wet diaper. It has to be changed immediately.

Should I be concerned? Does anyone else have a 3 month old still wetting this often? BTDT, what do you think?

Re: Too Many Diapers?

  • That does seem like a bit much. Did you ask the pediatrician about that?

LO gets changed every 2 hours while awake, so I'd say we go through about 9-11 diapers a day.

Some babies can sit comfortably in a slightly damp diaper, some need to be changed right away. Tyler is a mix of both and will pee right after changing his pee diaper, causing us to have to change it again only to have him pee AGAIN and flip out every time, lol. That's 3 right there in a matter of what, 5 minutes?. Just as long as you're getting wet diapers, I think you're fine.

  • I wouldn't be worried if she is having "too many" wet diapers. It's a good thing that she is wetting diapers.

On the other hand I would be worried if she wasn't having any wet diapers or very few.
  • @Maritza707 DD does this all the time! Yesterday I changed 5 diapers in 30 min.

Oddly, she doesn't mind her poop diapers. And they are full as she goes up to 5 days between poos.

  • I don't think I'd be concerned but you could give a quick call to the pediatrician just to confirm for peace of mind. I think they're only concerned if there's a lack of wet diapers. Like pp said, sometimes I go through two or three within a few minutes because LO will go right after getting changed.

  • @ljutcmommy Too funny, although expensive, lol. The daycare also said the same thing about him. Sometimes he's fine and doesn't fuss, so they don't realize he's wet until they check him (which is often). Other times he screams bloody murder right away, lol.

  • @MommyKristin88 Yes, I did ask her she said some babies can go up to 20x a day and it's normal.

She also thinks I may just notice more since DD demands to be changed more. Some babies may wet 3 times and not really mind their diaper being changed until the third pee. That's one diaper for that baby and 3 for mine.

I still think it's odd. And so many people try to tell me she's not eating enough, I'm paranoid it could mean something else.

  • This is an odd circumstance, but my cousin had an undiagnosed uti as a baby (symptom was too many wet diapers) and now has permenant kidney damage. It doesn't hurt to ask the pediatrician...
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • We go through about 12 diapers a day. She doesn't pee very much overnight but then after waking for the day she will go through 2 diapers in like 45-60 minutes.

I swear my baby is like a cat when you clean the litter box; A fresh diaper hits her butt and she has to take advantage and pee.

  • @mommabmb That is scary! The pedi wasn't concerned about that. How would a baby even get a UTI? I will bring it up with her again. How do they check for a UTI in an infant?

I really don't know. My cousin is 13 now.... I guess that was a while ago. I had no idea about it, actually, until my aunt visited last month and I saw her taking meds and asked what they were for. Like I said, that might be totally random, and in addition she was a very upset baby (she probably hurt!) so if there are no other symptoms I doubt this is your scenario.... But it's worth asking to make sure everything is okay, I think.

  • Both of my kids can sit in dirty diapers for days. No we have never let them. Some babies can't stand it at all. So yeah, that sounds normal

Either they use a catheter to get a sample or you have to catch the pee in a cup.

  • My lo goes through that many diapers as well probably. Sometimes I get him from the rnp and he has pee and poop and made no noise. Other times the slightest pee sets him off. Sometimes we change diaper 3 times in a short time cause of that.
  • I wouldn't worry too much about LO getting enough to eat if not fussing once done. My LO is the same way nursing from anywhere between 3-10 min on the norm. But I just did a weighed feeding and he couldn't have been nursing for more than 5 min and got about 3 oz. the LC was very impressed. So if baby is happy, wetting and gaining don't let anyone tell you you're not feeding enough.

  • My lo just had a huge dump while I read thus post :) she has a lot of wets, it depends on the day
  • My baby is the same way. He can't stand to have a wet diaper at all. We probably change him hourly because of this. Other than stoking up on diapers (which we do well) I don't see a problem. Maybe speak with your pedi just in case if it will make you feel better.

When she was 6 weeks I was so paranoid from family telling me she's not eating enough, I met my LC and DD transferred 3 oz in 5 minutes and had been gaining, so my LC told me we were fine.

As a FTM, I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything or doing anything wrong.

  • Minus the reflux, you and I are singing the *exact* same tune. I also got concerned a little bit ago because of how many she was wetting(maybe 10/day but sometimes a lot more) but everything else seems fine, so I've let it go.

The thing that bothers me the most is that she has consistently only pooped once a day for the last 2 months. It's always a big explosive poop and then she'll do it every two days for a week then go back to once a day, then not poop for a few days. Weird.

  • Same story here. The *second* that little wetness indicator goes the slightest bit blue, I'll know about it. The only time her diapers get super full is at night when she sleeps through it. She'll also have times where she'll pee (or poo) seemingly every 10 minutes for half an hour or 40 minutes.
I blame it on her dad, he can't stand to be messy either.

From what I've read, lots of diapers isn't a concern unless there are other symptoms accompanying it. That being said, if you're worried mention it to your pedi.

  • @RoosterMemphis My baby has irregular poos too. Last week, she went 5 days without one. The last 3 days, she's gone every day. Today, she's gone twice. It's really erratic.

  • she may just be particular in not liking to be wet AT. ALL.  DD has her days when she is like this. As soon as she's we she gets fussy and i change her and all is well. She doesn't complain a whole but she definitely doesnt like a wet diaper. I change her as often as I need or that she needs. My LC says she''s doing perfectly.
  • Lol. I realized that I described her pooping schedule in an odd way. But you get the idea.

I wouldn't be concerned unless there's a foul smell or the urine is a dark. As pp said, if they did suspect UTI they'd most likely do a catheter. Sounds like she just doesn't like to be wet, lots of wet diapers sounds like she's in great health to me!

  • LO goes through at least 15 diapers a day still (10w5d). We CD but LO hates being wet so he will yell as soon as he pees, we change him an then he poops right away in the new one. There are days i change 3/4 diapers in less than an hour but then well go 3+ hours before we repeat the process. He'll wait in a poop diaper but pee diapers he will not tolerate.
Our pedi did do some blood work just to check everything out since we also have some weight gain issues. Everything was fine except he's boardline anemic which the dr said wasn't abnormal at 2 months old
  • I could have wrote this same post word for word! And it's making STTN impossible, but I'm hoping that maybe we will get lucky and have easy potty trainers because LO will not want to be in a wet diaper. Looking for the positive ;)

Mine too, then on Thursday she pooped 6 times! I don't even keep track unless it goes more than a few days, I feel like im preoccupied with her pooping
  • Every time my LO is fed she usually gets a poopy diaper. The only crying she does is if she doesn't poop and that's happened here and there since we started supplementing with formula. I'd be concerned if she (my DD) wasn't going rather than the other way around.

LO is 9 weeks and he is a little anal about his diapers as well (lets face it mommy is too). I don't know how many wet diapers he has exactly but I feel like I change him every one to two hours during the day. He has one poop a day but he is formula fed (oddly, he will smile through poopy diapers). The wetness probably makes them cold.

Like pp's have said, as long as there is no dark color or odor, she is fine. But you can always bring it up to the Pedi.
