Waking baby

Hi everyone. When did you start letting your babies sleep until they woke you for a middle of the night feeding? I have been setting my alarm, and wondering when that can end. A stretch Of sleep longer than 2 hours sounds amazing right about now. My girl is 2 weeks old and currently feeds every 3 hours at night, and every 2-2.5 hours during the day. Thanks!

My pedi told me to not wake from the beginning...I think he has some old school thinking, but I followed. She woke me when she was hungry....Every 3-4 hours for for the first few weeks. I followed her lead.

Edit: She was a good eater and was gaining weight from the beginning, He may have advised me different if she was not gaining.

  • From the very night we brought her home that I let her wake me up for her feedings. The first week we were in a jumbled schedule but now it's twice during the night usually around midnight or 1 then again around 4 or 5. I usually pump after I put her back in bed to stay awake and have an extra supply just in case she stirs herself back awake. I do though try to keep her up past 5 PM so DH can see her when he comes home from work. I usually try to get her in bed no later than 9 PM, which works because DH has to be in bed around that same time.
  • Once she passed her birth weight

  • At my DS's 2 week appt the pedi told me that I don't have to wake him up (I wasn't really anyways, my guy was hungry every 2-3 hours.) The most he has gone without eating is 5 hours.

Mine said the same. She gained weight and slept 4-5 hours a night and I was so glad that I listened to him instead of the nurses who insisted that I wake her.

  • Thanks everyone. We go in for her two week appointment today. :)
  • We stopped waking at night once she reached her birth weight at her 2 week appointment. LO was jaundiced and lost almost a pound in the beginning so we had to keep waking at night until she was back up to her birth weight.
  • From day 1. The nurses in the hospital encouraged on demand feeding, which meant dont wake them if they're sleeping:)
  • Our ped gave us the ok once she hit birth weight, but recommended that we continued to wake her for the first four weeks. She is 10 weeks now, and for the past 6 we have let her wake us up when she is hungry.

Same here. She was an ounce short of her birth weight at her five day check up and she would eat at odd intervals. Sometimes 45 minutes between feedings, others up to four or five hours. I worried at first but at her two week check up she had gained 14 oz in a week.
  • I agree with PPs, the only exception being I will wake her if I'm getting too engorged, I'm prone to clogged ducts, so I'll wake her to help me out sometimes.
