Success after IF

TTC #2

I don't post on here often at all but just thought I would get some feedback.  I know everyone is different but we are trying for #2 now.  I just had DS Aug 26 and we had to use IVF for him.  Our doctors told us our best chances to get pregnant naturally would right after #1.  I thought I would see who has had experience getting prego on their own after troubles with #1.  On a whim I did an ovulation test on Monday (haven't gotten period back yet) and it was positive so we got to work Monday morning, Tues night and this morning.  I'm trying not to get my hopes up but that was the first time I have ever gotten a positive ovulation test without using the HCG shot!  Thanks!

It really depends on your diagnosis. I got pregnant without medical intervention my first postpartum cycle. We have PCOS and MFI.

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS and endo.  I had a diag lap done and he cleaned me all out but still wasn't able to get pregnant so after a couple more months of trying we moved to IVF.  It drives my doctor nuts that he wasn't able to get us pregnant without the IVF so that is why he is hopeful that after a pregnancy my body will kind of fix itself so we will see.  It is encouraging to hear you successful you were!!
  • Pcos here and never ovulated on my own after having ds so we went back to stims, trigger and iui when ds was a year and a few months. Good luck to you!

  • We want our kids close in age and luckily #1 is a VERY good baby so we decided since our OB said our best chances to get prego naturally were to try right away we would.  We aren't going to consider starting any meds until 6 months PP, we are just going to see what happens.  But since I got a positive ovulation test we are hoping things might happen on their own even if it doesn't happen the first couple months.
  • My diagnosis is DOR.  I used Clomid+IUI+progesterone to conceive number 1. We were (more or less) NTNP and got pregnant with this one. I don't know what cycle it was, but it was a year after DS was born.  My period came back about 2 months after he was born.

You know, I can't tell you how many times people told me: "Oh, you had trouble getting pregnant with the first, but after that you won't have any trouble at all." I thought they were full of crap and that this was an OWT, but I have to say, just as a matter of observation, it does seem like a lot of women who have a lot of trouble conceiving number 1 do go on to conceive number 2 without medical intervention...but that may just be because we are on the "Success After IF board.'

I do remember seeing a study that a decent percentage of couples go on to have a spontaneous pregnancy after having to use IVF for their first.  I don't remember what the exact percentage was, but it was higher than I thought it would be.  I think the percentage was highest in the "unexplained" category.  Of course, they also followed these couples for something akin to 7 to 10 years or something...which is probably longer than most people are willing to try on their own without resorting to intervention.

  • Before we started trying for #1 I wouldn't have thought to try right away, but after everything we went thru to get him we decided it was what we wanted.  I had to have a C-section but had a great recovery and I credit that to being in shape before and during my pregnancy.  We are just hoping for the best!

Obviously your OB has ok'd this, but so soon after a c-section might give me a little pause for concern about a possible abruption if you did conceive right away.  At about 7 months, I went in for an ultrasound of my uterus and I still was not completely healed internally even though I felt like I was healed.

This is completely me, but I personally would probably want to wait at least 6 months after the C-section to conceive again to give the uterus plenty of time to heal...but that is just me.

  • IBackBevo:  Thank you for the thoughts on the uterus, completely valid concerns.  When I did my 6 wk check my doctor did a check and said everything had healed perfectly so hopefully he is right!  The other part of me says I'm nuts for even thinking about this because it probably won't happen right away but just thought I would get some feedback from some ladies that had been through this before.
  • I wish you luck in TTC #2. For us, it hasn't happened on it's own the second time around. I had a c-section as well and my OB was quite adamant about waiting at least 6 months before trying for another.

  • I think those getting pregnant without intervention I seriously still believe t depends on the issue. My body still don't ovulate after having ds. Some are lucky

  • I never got pregnant that quickly after giving birth but have had two unassisted pregnancies (well, three if you count my first child).  One was about seven months after I had my second child which I sadly went on to miscarry and the other was about eight months after I had my third child.

I don't have PCOS though and have always ovulated.  Our issues were mainly my age and my husband's sperm.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Oh, I completely agree that it depends on the issue...If you don't O on your own or don't have tubes or some other similar issue, it isn't going to happen naturally.

After four years of trying and multiple failed IF treatments we got a surprise BFP which resulted in DS. After DS I seemed to be able to get pregnant but couldn't stay pregnant so we had to go back to the RE. At this point I don't know what my issue is. So, in a way I guess having a baby helped me as I couldn't even get pregnant before DS.

After 4 years, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs our surprise miracle is here!

My RE said some IF conditions can be "corrected" so to speak with a successful full term pg.  I'll never know since we aren't having anymore, but I do have a friend who had MFI and had to do IVF for #1 after 3 years TTC.  She went on to conceive 3 more children without any treatments at all (in fact, all 3 were surprises...after being told by the RE they had a less than 1% chance of conceiving on their own).  I know her issues were MFI, but there may have been some issues on her end, too, that corrected during her pg with #1.

Not going to lie so jealous of this!!
