I was just thinking about how many moms I have talked to who have had babies this year tell me that they let their babes sleep on their belly so I wanted to do this poll and see.
Baby belly sleepers 253 votes
Yes, they sleep better and helps with gassy/fussyness
DD and DS would only sleep on their bellies so I'm okay with it. they both scream when they where on their backs and never slept ever. I always watched them until they could turn their head on their own with out getting stuck in the middle.
I didn't put DD on her belly until she started rolling herself and we stopped using the swaddle. She loved it. She always slept with her butt up in the air. It was cute.
I'm having trouble with this and have been trying to research why stomach sleeping is seemingly so much more dangerous. I haven't found much definitive other than correlation with decreasing SIDS rates. My first always slept on her back/ side, this one will sleep amazingly on her belly at night but not at all on her back. So far I've only let her sleep like that when I'm awake and watching her. Its frustrating.

I hear ya I was a nut with DD every time she moved I was awake with the light on asap! This little guy had head control as soon as he popped out. I'm not as worried about him but I do still wake up every time he moves!
DS didn't sleep on his belly until he could roll there himself (other than napping on our chests). It'll be the same with DD. I worry about SIDS enough as it is. It's not worth it to me to increase the risk.
All mine preferred the belly but I just can't take the risk. Not until they can roll over do I let them...but by then I don't have much of a choice lol
I chose yes just because he sleeps on my chest a lot while napping. So I couldn't honestly say he never does it. He prefers his tummy, but we do put him to sleep for the night on his back. If I have him on my chest during a nap I am watching so I feel okay about it. Lately he has been twisting himself to his side as well.
DS Is sleeping in the rnp and we usually swaddle him so I put no but my pediatrician said its fine for him to sleep on his tummy if it's more comfortable to him. I feel like there's always a risk for everything any which way :-S
We couldn't get LO to sleep on his back from Day 1 and it was the hospital nurse who stuck him on his side the first time. I was shocked. Of course, I laid there and stared at him the entire time to make sure he was breathing (lol).
We don't put him to sleep on his belly, unless it's a chest nap; 50% of the time he sleeps on his back in the Rock & Play, the other 50% he sleeps on his back/side in his Playard.
He can move his head from side to side during tummy time, and during chest naps, so I wonder if he'd prefer to sleep that way, but I'm too FTM-terrified to let him yet.
My mom let all of us sleep on our belly.

Same. My girls have been early rollers. By about 4 months my babies are tummy sleepers. But that's because it would be more unsafe to try to force them to stay on their backs than to let them be on their tummies. Prior to that, my babies only nap on their tummies if they sleep on someone.

My girls love falling asleep on their tummies while on my belly. As long as I am awake I let them nap like that but I don't put them down like that anywhere else.
I've been putting her to sleep on her back. But, she falls asleep about 30 seconds into tummy time each time. I think she might end up napping on her belly.

It's my understanding that it has more to do with air flow. When on their tummies, they are breathing in some of the same air over and over because circulation isn't high enough and they aren't strong enough to move when they aren't getting enough new air. It's one of the reasons bumpers are a no-no.
DD1 slept on her back but was a terrible sleeper no matter how she slept until we sleep trained at 6 months.
DD1 has been sleeping on my chest. Yes. I know this is controversial. But I actually learned it at my hospital when the nurse tucked us in together. She placed DD on my bare chest and wrapped a blanket over our torsos tucking it in under my back. I asked her I it was safe. Her response was yes and that it's encouraged. Now my hospital is on the progressive side. I don't see my old hospital encouraging this at all. But I didn't really care for tht hospital at all.
DD2 sleeps really well this way. I sleep just okay but it's the same when she's in the bassinet (which she hates being flat in and is not a swaddle fan). I feel very in tune with her sleeping this way. I keep her in just a diaper so the bond is stronger. Sometimes we sleep chest to chest, sometimes she's more on her side, and sometimes we're (her) back to (my) chest. The blanket keeps her swaddled against me and from rolling off. I just stay on my back and don't really deviate from that position.
If I were a heavy sleeper and weren't ebf, I wouldn't sleep this way. But I feel it works for us.
DD1 slept on her belly as soon as she could roll over. I would find her on her belly, in her swaddle, every time I went to check on her. I ditched the swaddle and let her sleep that way as soon as she could roll belly to back and back to belly. She still sleeps on her belly to this day.
DD2 has yet to sleep on her belly, even when she sleeps on me. During tummy time she sucks at holding up her head and will scream face down into the blanket. Nope octopus to having her sleep on her belly.
My LO def prefers the belly....but no way will I let him overnight. Just during the day tummy time is it! I personally know of 2 babies who have died from SIDs so it's just not worth the risk to me!

This "advice" would lead me to change pediatricians. There is literally no wiggle room on the "back to sleep" recommendation by the pediatrics medical association (AAP). Of course babies are more "comfortable" on their stomachs. They think that this increased comfort leads to much deeper sleep than is "natural," and leads to babies not being able to wake themselves up if they stop breathing...
@crunchymama11 --haha! I didn't see your post until I posted (on my phone)! And i somehow suspect that if we sat down and talked parenting, we would probably agree on more than you think...
The nurses at the hospital told me I had to put LO on his side. He spits up a lot and we are afraid that he might choke. Too paranoid to let him sleep on his stomach.
I put her down on her back and she rolls onto her belly, scrunches up her knees, and sticks her bottom in the air. Then rips farts that would make a sailor blush.
I know LO likes belly but so far I have only let her do it supervised... however today for the first time she showed us that she learned how to roll from back to stomach... so it will be *very* interesting to see what position she ends up being in on her own now.
