October 2013 Moms

Dirty lurker intro, a question & PIP :)

Hello Oct mommas!

I have been lurking around pretty much my entire pregnancy but never got around to an intro or being an active member except for maybe one or two replies I made early on. Oops. Please forgive me. I have wanted to do this many times but here we are.

I am 26, FTM, married to my DH for 2 years this coming March but we started dating when i was 16. We welcomed our little lady Emma Helena into the world on October 15, my due date was the 19th but had to be induced for pre e. She was a whopping 9 lbs 9.5 oz and 23.5 inches long! I will spare you all the nitty gritty details mainly because this is getting long :)

Now on to my question: for the BFing moms, when you are out at the store and LO needs fed how are you handling this? DH and I were in Target today and LO needed fed and I went to the family bathroom expecting there to be a chair and low and behold there was none! I actually ended up just standing in the bathroom to feed her since it was at least private but I'm wondering if anyone has run into a similar situation and what you did?

And if you made it through all of this I give you miss Emma in her 2 halloween outfits from today!

  • Hi, and welcome!
The car is my best friend, when LO is hungry!
    Public bathrooms freak me out!

So far I have been able to time my trips around feeding schedules, but if I needed to feed him while I was out and there wasn't anyplace private aside from a restroom, I would probably use my car.

Eta: we usually bring a bottle of expressed milk out with us just in case he gets hungry and we need to feed him in a pinch.

  • Thanks for the welcome!

I did consider the car but it was raining at the time and wanted to keep from running outside. That may be where i end up next time!
  • I'm a FTM and not really comfortable with feeding in public yet. And only been out a couple times. I just took an emergency bottle with me. I'm sure I'll get used to it at some point, but I'd rather my car or a bathroom.

  • Also I noticed my pictures didn't show up. What am I doing wrong? I used the attach file at the bottom.

  • I put my baby in the Moby wrap and nurse while shopping.

Yeah I see them now too not sure why when I looked before I didn't see them. I'm blaming lack of sleep.
  • I've been planning trips around feeds right now just because it is easier, but I don't have a problem with feeding her in public. If I was at target and couldn't find a place in the restroom (which would skeeve me out a bit anyway) I'd probably go to the customer service area where there are chairs or just out to the car to be comfortable.
I am hoping the more I am out I can plan it better but she still isn't very consistent with her times for feeding, we have had a couple piggy days where she wants fed every hour! Also hoping to get more comfortable with it to be able to just do it wherever if I need to.
  • Hi!
Just get a good cover and walk around nursing or get some sort of carrier that would allow you nurse.

Thanks, i'll have to look into getting either of these to make it easier on myself.
  • If your not comfortable doing it in the open, which I never could either, there's nothing wrong with that. You can go to the dressing rooms to nurse.
Oh, that didn't even occur to me. That's much better than the bathroom Thanks!
  • I did this just the other day. I simply put her in the ring sling, put in my cover (I use one with a rigid neckline for easy viewing if baby) and latched her on. It was great because I only had to support her head. So I still had a free arm.

My advice would be to practice at home. I was never and will never be someone who goes somewhere else to nurse. I'll make it work where I am. I was the same with DD1. When she was a NB (before I had a ring sling), I just held her football style under my cover and walked around nursing her. But sans ring sling meant I needed both hands to accomplish this.
  • Thanks for all the responses ladies, you have definitely given me many good options to look into.
  • Fitting room!

  • I am a STM and have no issues nursing whenever wherever now, but initially I was more conservative. I would definitely do a fitting room before a restroom and the backseat of the car was a good option before we had two car seats.
The covers with the rigid tops are the way to go. I know people hate the free-except-shipping offers like Seven Slings or whatever, but Udder Covers does the same thing and their covers work just as well and cost less than what I've seen in stores.
I hope people will get more comfortable nursing in public. For me, I was never uncomfortable doing it, but I definitely got more comfortable and less shy about it with time. The more people who do it, the more normal it becomes and the more people will feel comfortable feeding their babies the most natural way. Good luck.
  • I used to work retail and occasionally nursing moms asked to use the fitting room to nurse. I always said yes.

  • Dressing rooms were my friends!
  • Always a fitting room. I do the same at the mall.
  • Dressing rooms work well. But today I was out and LO got frantic (he wakes up and demands boob) and I didn't have time to get the moby wrap on so I just used my cover and walked around nursing him. If I have time I'll do the moby wrap but he is getting too big for the newborn hold I was doing and I have yet to figure out the next one.

  • I feed him while holding him with a light blanket to cover up (like an A&A) or I feed him in one of my carriers while walking around, I like my ring sling and Moby for this right now. With my first I would use a dressing room but never ever ever a bathroom! This is my third though so I got over my NIP shyness a long time ago!

  • I was never really shy about nip. I'm small chested so most people cant tell I'm nursing with the way I layer. Carriers are great if you need to be hands free and still shop. The ergo has a hood that makes a great cover up. A ring sling is easy to nurse in and has the tail to cover with. If I needed to sit I'd probably head to the snack skip area so I could also get something to drink.

  • Welcome!

So far, I've been able to time most outings between feedings. Yesterday, I was at the mall with a friend and luckily Von Maur has a mother's room that I used. I'm not confident enough with bfing to do it in a sling/ carrier
