Overwhelmed

So ds has been sick on and off for the past two months. He had two hospital stays overnight for febrile seizures and then breathing, then he's been dealing with severe constipation for the past three weeks, and now he's back to breathing problems. I've missed a lot of work and a lot of sleep. Plus I learned yesterday I didn't get a promotion I interviewed for that would have been a Huge help financially. We live with my parents until my dh graduates in the spring which is so stressful. I'm just over it all. I'm exhausted. And I'm so anxious about all this illness with ds.

Mostly I'm just venting but for second time moms is it normal to have a period of constant ailments? It's getting concerning to me. Especially now that he got sick and is having wheezing and breathing treatments again. Blah.

Re: Overwhelmed

  • I'm sorry.  :(  I do think the thing about him having lots of illnesses right at once is fairly normal.  It ebbs and flows, the well times and the sick times.  There was a period of about 6 months when the kids were really exposed to a bazillion kids every day that they were sick back to back to back.  It was awful and exhausting, but it was over eventually... Hang in there!

  • I'm sorry he's sick again. Like GWP said it does ebb and flow. During dd1 first year of preschool she had a constant cold for the whole fall winter.
I don't really have any advice but to hang in there and things should get better.

  • argh, i'm sorry! that sounds tough. we've been dealing with back to back illnesses, too-- first DS had roseola, then he had another random high fever, then we all got a cold, which i'm having a hard time shaking because i'm overtired. (not to mention all the bumps and bruises DS is sustaining and inflicting on us!)

i was just reading in a book about toddlers that the average young child gets sick 8 times a year, and most of this is concentrated between october and april, which basically means they're sick almost every other week during winter and spring!
  • I'm so sorry. Poor little guy. I don't have advice on the illnesses, but can your parents or your H take him for a few hours on the weekend so you can have a break?

I only ds would let them! He would have to be taken somewhere or else he is constanly trying to get me.

Thanks ladies. I don't like to complain but I'm feeling down.

Just leave him with them and like go to Starbucks with a book or for a walk by yourself. Having alone time is so important. You'll be a better mom if you make a little time for yourself. And I'll add I'm basically the pot calling the kettle black here. ((hugs))

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I am so sorry you are going through this.  DS#2 had 7 febrile seizures between 15 months and 2.5 years.  It was HORRIBLE.  They are so scary.  He got sick 1 time per month for a stretch of 4 months and had a seizure each time.  They say that kids who have them outgrow it by 5-6 years old, but in the meantime it is like you are always on edge because they hit when you least expect it.
