Intro and feeding question

Hi! I am a long term lurker but have never posted before..... My son was born on 05/25 at 30 weeks. His long bones measured small starting at 20 weeks and by 30 weeks the umbilical cord flow had reversed so he was delivered immediately. He had IUGR but a pretty uneventful NICU stay (all things considered) and was discharged after two long months. He did have jaundice, anemia, PFO and PDA which have all since resolved.

He is now 5 months old, 2 and half months adjusted, and just decided he doesn't want to take a bottle. He actually gets really mad about it! He is a great nurser but his ped has directed us to give him 2-3 fortified bottles a day to help with "catch up growth". I don't know if it's the bottle or the neosure fortifier but he HATES the bottle. I am still so terrified that he won't gain the appropriate weight I am not sure what to do....his weight gain has slowed the past two weeks to 3 oz a week so something needs to change I'm just not sure what. His current weight is 9 lbs 15 oz. I guess my rambling is just looking for any suggestions. I am tempted to stop the fortifier to see if that helps, has anyone done this and had a positive result?

Thanks everyone and sorry this ended up being so long!!

Re: Intro and feeding question

  • Congrats on your baby! I would try a higher flow nipple, if you haven't. I'd also try different types of bottles. Different brands have different shaped nipples and he may like one more than another. Good luck!

  • Sometimes I feel like I'm SO close to the situation I can't see the obvious!! Thanks for the great suggestions!!
  • I would start with trying a different nipple/bottle. We use Dr. Browns to minimize the air she takes in since she is on the gassy side and her gas still really bothers her.

Yep, yep. We've gone through 5 different bottle/nipple types. Check to make sure you can't just buy nipples instead of the bottles. Much cheaper. A lot of them are the same size. And then there are those that aren't. Ugh. Anyway we ended up using Dr browns without the inserts, I know right, and had to order the nipples they used in the nicu. Trial and error. Good luck!!!
